Within three weeks of becoming the Phillies' general manager last fall, Ruben Amaro Jr. made a deal for a player whose bio bore remarkable similarities to his own. John Mayberry Jr., named for his major-leaguer dad, played at Stanford almost 20 years behind...

With baseball reaching a fever pitch in Philadelphia, it’s time to dial it down a notch with some buzz-killing minor league updates. Yaquis de Obregon of the Mexican Winter League will be home to four Phillies prospects this offseason, including top prospect and 2009 Paul Owens Award winner Michael Taylor, 23. Taylor, a five-skill outfielder who hit .320/.395/.549 between Reading and Lehigh Valley,...

Kyle Kendrick and John Mayberry generated oodles of attention this spring. Seven months later, their presence on the expanded roster registers as a footnote. Time flies. It seems like yesterday when the Phillies reached a consensus that Kendrick needed an entire season in the minors to regroup. Lo and behold, the 25-year-old finished the task, pitching as well as one could expect in 24 starts at Triple-A...

John Mayberry, Jr., OF Born: 12/21/1983 in Kansas City, Missouri Height: 6’6” Weight: 230 There is some familiarity with Mayberry, as he is one of just three Phillies prospects in the top 25 to already log time with the major league club. Mayberry’s experience with the Phils earlier this season made two things clear: he is capable of hitting [...]

After hitting three more doubles and driving in two more runs tonight, I wanted to look at the season Billy Butler is having and compare that to those seasons of former Royals greats of the past at the ages of 22, 23 or 24. Billy Butler's projected stats for the remainder of the year: .301 BA, 19 HR, 88 RBI, 56 Doubles, .355 OBP, 183 hits. Compare that to these two groups of players, the first group...

I say no. The Mets did go into this season as the favorites in the NL East, having acquired J.J. Putz to be their set-up man and Francisco Rodriguez to be their closer. The foursome of Jose Reyes, David Wright, Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado presented itself as one of the strongest in all of baseball. And, with Johan Santana, the team has one of the top starters in baseball and a stopper. But then...
