Potential Player of Interest -- Jonny Gomes

The Rangers need a reasonably priced righthanded bat with pop that can DH and maybe fill in at a COF or CIF spot. And I stumbled last night on an item by Ken Rosenthal that discussed a guy who could be a fit -- Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jonny Gomes. Gomes is a guy I have always found to be intriguing, but who I finally gave up on last season and ignored...and he went on to have a pretty good season...

Reds Notes: Jocketty, Nix, Gomes

John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer gathered a few bits of information Saturday from Reds general manager Walt Jocketty: The Reds have made an offer to Laynce Nix, who was outrighted off the 40-man roster this week and elected free agency. Jocketty believes he "may take it" but first wants to "see what's out there." Jocketty believes the Reds will be able to "get something...

Laynce Nix Elects Free Agency

Outfielder Laynce Nix has been outrighted by the Reds and elected free agency, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon. Nix was considered a non-tender candidate, as the Reds have plenty of outfield candidates already. In a few weeks they must decide whether to tender Jonny Gomes a contract (seems like a good idea to me). Nix, 29, received the most playing time of his career since 2004 this year. He hit...

Plenty of transactions for Reds

John Fay believes after all the Reds' moves today, the team will offer Jonny Gomes arbitration. If they weren't, they could have done what they did with Laynce Nix and kept Daryl Thompson.

Red Reposter - Where Were You When You Heard The Reds Re-signed Ramon Hernandez?

More photos » by David J. Phillip - AP Ramon Hernandez will be back next year, but could that affect the contract status of guys like Jonny Gomes and Jared Burton? Browse more photos » Hall o' Famer Hal weighs in with his opinion on the Hernandez signing and he does little to convince me. "Hernandez hit only .258 last year with five homers and 37 RBIs, but...(he) is the kind of guy...

Oh no!

Kip Wells is gone! The sky is falling! Wells is the only Red to file for free agency, but the Reds still have some decisions to make. They’ve already made the questionable decision to bring back Ramon Hernandez. Next up: Jonny Gomes and Laynce Nix. Should the Reds bring either of these guys back? You know I [...]

How much is Jonny Gomes worth?

More photos » by David Kohl - AP Jonny Gomes can mash the ball. But he may be the Reds' worst fielder, which cuts deeply into his value. Browse more photos » A lot of the talk about the Hernandez signing was about whether the money spent on Hernandez would affect our ability to sign Jonny Gomes . I thought it'd be worth it to try to estimate how much Jonny Gomes should actually be paid...

CHONE's projections for hitters for 2010 are out

CHONE's projections for hitters for 2010 are out Could the Reds really be better off non-tendering Jonny Gomes, saving the few million bucks, and going with Wladimir Balentien instead? Check 'em out and tell me what you think.

Jeff Zimmerman's UZR projections

Jeff Zimmerman's UZR projections Jeff Zimmerman posted his 2010 UZR projections. I haven't completely worked through his methodology, but the results seem pretty reasonable. Here are the main Reds of interest: Joey Votto: +2 Brandon Phillips: +7 Paul Janish: +4 (sample size may pull him down a bit) Scott Rolen: +7 Chris Dickerson: +1 in CF, +1 in LF (usually a 10-run difference per season between those...

For the Reds the Off Season Will Flow Out of LF

The biggest decision facing the Reds to begin the offseason is the choice of a left fielder. It is unlikely the Reds will spend money to go after a free agent like Matt Holliday or Jason Bay: instead, the choice is between which incumbent will get a commitment. The candidates: Jonny Gomes, Wladimir Balentien, Chris Dickerson, and perhaps even Willy Taveras. Added by: PeteSchiller Viewed: 0 time(s)...
