In his most recent blog post, ESPN's Buster Olney says that besides their outfield needs their main focus will be their bullpen and in all likelihood will look to land two relievers. Olney also said that "it's unclear whether New York GM Brian Cashman is going to be willing to give up his first-round pick in the draft for a set-up man." Names Olney mentions as possible targets were Rafael...

The Astros are going to give 3B Chris Johnson and C Jason Castro every chance to be in the Opening Day starting lineup. But they're prepared to send one or both of them to AAA if they have tough springs. At the moment, the Astros are set at just four of eight positions: LF Carlos Lee, CF Michael Bourn, RF Hunter Pence and 1B Lance Berkman. Every other position is open. Some are less open than others....

I've been looking at the list of free agents, and I'm not seeing anyone that I'm in any rush to buy. Matt Holliday is going to cost a fortune as a hitter, as is pitcher John Lackey . Both are very good, but overpriced in the current market. So, who's left? Jason Bay ? Chone Figgins ? For pitching, Randy Wolf or Rich Harden ? Maybe Mark DeRosa as a utility player? I'm just not seeing any quick fixes...

Alright, so I know most of the discussion so far about the offseason has involved our free agents ( John Lackey , Chone Figgins , Vladimir Guerrero , and Darren Oliver ), big hitting free agents ( Jason Bay & Matt Holliday ), and trades (anyone remember a discussion about Curtis Granderson ?), but there has not been much discussion about other free agents on the market which could really help our...

by David J. Phillip - AP Will the Hawk be back in Houston? View full size photo » We already covered the basics of the reliever market with Jose Valverde 's profile, so I thought the most illuminating thing to do with Hawkins is to see which teams might actually need a closer this winter. That, of course, is going to be the difference in him signing for 5-7 million and 2-3 million. Hawkins has...

Paul White at the USA Today is projecting that the Tigers will sign Astros closer Jose Valverde. He’s a little too injury prone for my tastes and my bet is his price tag will be too high. The Tigers have some good young arms to use in the pen. If they’re going to go for [...]

This might qualify as a news flash: a couple of writers in the traditional baseball media aren't suggesting the Tigers trade off players to reduce payroll (or subsidize the Yankees and Red Sox ). Instead, they think Detroit should stay in contention by adding a key piece to their bullpen. First, FOXSports.com 's Dayn Perry lists 10 moves that teams should make this offseason to improve themselves....

I mean aside from the fact that they're talented pitchers with above average ability. Blum hit a three-run homer in the sixth and an RBI single in the ninth for Houston, which managed to get the win despite a shaky start by Roy Oswalt. Lance Berkman walked twice and scored three times. The loss ended Milwaukee's three-game...
