The 2009 AL Most Valuable Player Award is being announced today at 2 p.m. Anthony DiComa of MLB.com wrote an article yesterday that implied Derek Jeter has the best chance to win the award besides the heavy favorite Joe Mauer . That surprised me, as I have thought all along that Mark Teixeira has the best chance because he led the league in homers and RBIs and played gold glove defense. DiComa made...

What was once lost is gained again. A source close to the situation has informed us that Swindle is indeed back in the organization on a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. As you can expect, his velocity will not scare many batters. His average fastball sits in the low-80s and tops out below 85. He throws a smorgasbord of complimentary pitches though, some that even confuse the...

(AP Photo/Ed Zurga) Browse more photos » Regardless of what happens with the actual MVP award, SBN baseball writers got it right as Joe Mauer won the MVP in a landslide. Mauer's OPS+ of 170 is the second highest by a catcher in history ( Mike Piazza posted an OPS+ of 177 in 1997). Mauer led baseball in Batting Average, On-Base...

MLB announced the winners of the Gold Glove for the American League yesterday and once again, the awards prove that in a sport like baseball – where numbers mean everything – that the numbers, really, mean nothing. It's easy to take fielding percentage, the number of errors, put outs and assists to figure out who is the best fielder, but that's the equivalent of taking a player's batting...

Since there will only be a few of us doing this mock, it'll be more like how we think drafts will be the closer we get to the season. Let me start this out with the number one pick.... Hanley Ramirez ....

Sure, there are other sports like football, hockey and basketball to enjoy while you're waiting for the return of major league baseball. It's hard, we know. But the offseason is the critical time when your team's general managers make their moves -- smart or not -- in an attempt to inch closer to their ultimate goal: a World Series Championship. That is the ultimate goal, right? Sometimes we wonder....

The head of my school was kind enough to grab a blaster box of these Goodwin Champions in her recent visit to the US of A. I had asked for Goodwins or Allen+Ginter, I even wrote it on a post-it note, for fear of receiving another fat pack of Upper Deck. If you observe my recent posting here, you will notice that English people visiting the US gravitate towards Upper Deck and more specifically the 'Fat...

And here I was, writing about whether or not the Twins should actually do it.... Of course my conclusion was an adament "YES, YES THE TWINS SHOULD PICK UP CUDDY'S 2011 OPTION". Clearly I have a nose for these things. Cuddyer's 2011 option is worth $10.5 million, but with the buyout an even million in its own right the Twins are essentially paying our right fielder $9.5 million for his services...

The Minnesota Twins have picked up outfielder Michael Cuddyer's $10.5 million option for 2011. Cuddyer hit a career-high 32 home runs to lead the team. He also had 94 RBIs and was sixth in the American League with 73 extra-base hits. When slugger Justin Morneau went out with a back injury in September, Cuddyer moved from right field to first base. He hit .352 with seven homers and 22 RBIs in the next...

The Twins have enjoyed an impressive run of sustained success over the past nine years. Only once during that span (2007) have they posted a losing record. And if there's one lesson to be taken from the '07 team, it relates to the pitfalls of complacency. In 2006, the Twins boasted a rather impressive offense. Joe Mauer won his first batting title, Justin Morneau captured the AL MVP award, Michael...

MLB.com's Kelly Thesier answered a few e-mails from fans in regard to what Minnesota might have up its sleeve in the offseason, and here are some of the most notable bits of news from the piece... Thesier said that though talks between the Twins and Joe Mauer about a contract extension haven't yet begun, "don't take Mauer's patience to mean that the catcher isn't interested in signing an extension."...
