GM Meetings Day 2: Open Thread

Check back periodically for updates... 9:30 am: Catching up on the highlights from yesterday • Carl Pavano wouldn’t mind sticking with the Twins as long as the money is right. Quotes from his agent, Tom O’Connell, imply that Pavano won’t settle for another contract asking for his client to re-establish himself. If he’d still be willing to take an incentive-laden contract...

Bringing Back Pavano

The Twins are currently amidst a two-week window of exclusive negotiating rights with internal free agents before the market opens on November 20. During that span, the team will have the opportunity to lock up Orlando Cabrera, Carl Pavano, Mike Redmond, Joe Crede and Ron Mahay before other teams can begin to make offers. From that group, we can already basically write a few names off. The trade for...

Twins Looking At Veteran Starters

While speaking with Joe Christensen of The Star Tribune, Twins' GM Bill Smith may have tipped his hand regarding the team's offseason plans. "We'll see what's out there," he said. "And if there's a veteran starter or two that's a good fit for us, then we'll proceed accordingly." The team is already returning at least five young starters, and that isn't counting Kevin Slowey's return...

Injuries Don't Matter With Minnesota

Memo to a few Kansas City Royals fans out there who believe injuries doomed this team – Minnesota's playing its best baseball without the following: • Justin Morneau, who's probably the best first baseman in baseball. • Kevin Slowey, who may have been their best pitcher of the season. • Joe Crede, who's a solid defender and contributor to any lineup. This also doesn't count the...

The End They needed to take three...

The End They needed to take three of four games in Detroit to give themselves a reasonable shot at the playoffs going into the final weekend, but instead two poor pitching performances, a ton of small ball-obsessed over-managing from Ron Gardenhire , and an injury-depleted, scrub-filled lineup has all but destroyed the Twins' hopes for a division crown even before the final game of the Tigers series....

Minnesota Twins 2010 Roster & Payroll (Part II)

Thanks for some fantastic coversation on Tuesday! Milt on Tilt, Eric In Madison, Seth Speaks, clutterheart, Fetch9, ajmargarine and everyone else who contributed made for a great discussion, helped clarify some things while running some good back-and-forth over dollars and stats. We'll start where we left off, which was discussing how internal options would help flesh out the depth chart. All players...

Somehow, Still Kicking

As the weeks began to wind down, the 2009 Twins season looked like a lost cause. The Tigers were playing better ball and starting to pull away. Justin Morneau, a crucial force in the middle of the Twins lineup for most of the season, had struggled through a terribly unproductive August before having his season shut down in early September due to a back injury. Kevin Slowey, Francisco Liriano and Glen...

2009 Topps Baseball Series 1 Walmart Black blaster

You have to love the summer holidays. No school, long days, relaxing and people going on trips abroad to places like Spain, Greece, Italy, the Caribbean and the USA. The teacher that I work closely with at school, Vicki, had a friend who went on holidays to the US, Florida to be exact. I keep my ear pretty close to the ground and the mere mention of the US, I am asking if the person could purchase...

If It's Friday, It Must Be Roster Move Day

Both the Carl Pavano and Orlando Cabrera acquisitions took place on Friday, known by many some my Mom as RandBall's Stu's day to man the Good Ship Twinkietown. If the buzzing rumor mill is any indication, this Friday could very well be another one of those days. The indefatigable Jesse has already discussed the Brad Penny option . There's also been talk of the Twins picking up Royals reliever Ron Mahay...

Orioles scouting report: Twins update

The Minnesota Twins are barely hanging on in the playoff race as they've struggled to compensate for an injury-ravaged rotation and a pitching staff that has the fourth worst ERA in the American League. Kevin Slowey (right wrist surgery) is out for the season, while Glen Perkins (left shoulder tendinitis) and Francisco Liriano (left arm fatigue) are also both on the disabled list.

The 2010 Rotation

Take the kids to the cellar, Ma. Looks like Blackburn's starting tonight. View full size photo uploaded August 21, 2009 Mathematically, it's too early to talk about 2010. Lots of divisional games left, the MVP behind the plate, Joe Nathan , LNP hitting .211 (!), etc. But really, COME ON. Every game starts with the Twins down 4-0 and Bobby Keppel warming up. This type of thing doesn't turn around in...

Minor League Report...August 15, 2009

A couple weeks after their most disappointing week of the season, the Twins organization produced their first 30 win week at 30-16. Rochester and Ft. Myers played .500 ball this week while the other five teams had winning records. New Britain remains in the hunt for a playoff spot as does the DSL Twins with Ft. Myers, Elizabethton and the GCL Twins all in first place. Today I will take a look at a...

Game 113: Kansas City Royals @ Minnesota Twins

First Pitch: 7:10pm CDT TV: FS-N Radio: Twins Radio Network Know Thine Enemy: Royals Review Let's keep in mind two things from last night: Even after last night's offensive output, the Royals ' lineup still only boasted two guys who hit better than .270. There are still two games left in this series to ensure the outcome is what it should be: a Twins series victory. And a couple other things, in case...
