Angels 40-Man Roster Set at 38

As the rights to exclusive negotiations with their free agents closed, like every major league club, the Angels set their 40-Man Roster yesterday. It stands at 38. Here they are listed in order of the earliest that each can become a free agent. * means a club option exists for an extra year. After 2010 Brian Fuentes * Maicer Izturis Scot Shields After 2011 Bobby Abreu * Scott Kazmir * Gary Matthews...

Read My Lips, No New Free-Agents!!!

The void that will be created with the departures of John Lackey , Chone Figgins , Darren Oliver , and Vladimir Guerrero will be felt long after they sign new contracts with their new teams. Lackey is a true number one Ace, Figgins is a true lead off hitter and has great defensive skills, Oliver isn't only a lefty specialist, and Vladimir was the face of the franchise. But like Tony Reagins said on...

Nuggets From The Bill James Handbook

More photos » by Julie Jacobson - AP Browse more photos » A couple of days ago I received "The Bill James Handbook" in the mail (from ACTA Sports ). For those of you who are unfamiliar with the handbook, it's 95% stats with a little commentary thrown in. Earlier, I posted what the handbook had projected for the 2010 Angels, but here are a few other things I found interesting:...

2010 Bill James Player Projections

More photos » by Chris Carlson - AP Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia has a busy off season in store for him. Browse more photos » Now that the Angels off-season is officially here, it's time to start the speculation of player moves the team may make prior to the start of the 2010 season. To help fuel the discussion on who should stay and who should go, below are the 2010 player...

Shortstop for 2010 - what to do?

Short is a big issue for 2010. Scutaro cannot be counted on we'd haveto assume (the Jays would do full medicals to know a lot better than usI hope) so what do they do? A strong #1 or #2 shortstop is needed. With this staff it has to be aleague average or better defensive one too (ala Scutaro & McDonald)but ideally also an offensive force (as good or better than Scutaro in2009). Checking Fangraphs...

Angels Send the Series Back to New York

Unfortunately Rich's Dodgers are out of it, but they had a solid season and reached the NLCS for a second year in a row. His Angles, on the other hand, won two of three in Anaheim and the series heads back to New York. The series resumes with weekend Saturday, and potentially Sunday, with the Angles needing to win both. Rich was treated to quite the game on Monday from the first row , as he watched...

Instant Replay?

West Des Moines' Tim McClelland made a couple of magnificent errors in calls at third base during Tuesday night's Yankees-Angels game. The first call came in the fourth inning with the Yankees Nick Swisher. Johnny Damon hit a fly to center and Swisher tagged up and scored, but the Angels appealed that Swisher left too early and McClelland called Swisher out. Replays showed McClelland was looking directly...

Tim McCarver Doesn’t Know His Aybars From His….

During Erick Aybar’s clutch 7th-inning AB in Monday’s ALCS Game 3, Tim McCarver made at least three errors in about fifteen seconds. All while attempting to issue a correction for an earlier factual error. See how many you can spot: I said it was Maicer Izturis, who was up there that didn’t get the bunt down last year [in a ALDS Game 4 loss for the Angels in Boston] — it was...

They Screw Up At Least One Important Call Every Game

More photos » by Kathy Willens - AP Browse more photos » I didn't get to watch the Angels / Yankees marathon last night, but I've been reading about it, and - surprise! - an umpire made a bad call that had a dramatic impact on the win expectancy. This one was the doings of second base umpire Jerry Layne, who decided the tenth inning would be a good time to stop calling the neighborhood...

Yanks need 13 innings to take 2-0 lead over Angels

Alex Rodriguez is turning this postseason into his personal showcase. Coming through under pressure once again, Rodriguez hit a tying homer in the 11th inning and the New York Yankees edged the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 Saturday night on Maicer Izturis' throwing error in the 13th for a 2-0 lead in the AL championship series.

Yankees Angels Game 2: Yankees Win Off Maicer Izturis Error, Alex Rodriguez Homer

NEW YORK — Maicer Izturis' throw zipped by second base, the ball careening out of control like a wet bar of soap, and headed toward somewhere near third. Chone Figgins fumbled it as the winning run scored. Typical for the Los Angeles Angels in this AL championship series gone awry. Something was fundamentally wrong on this trip to New York for this fundamentally sound team. "I think if I...

Angels Need Some to Watch Some of Those Tom Emanski Videos

The Angels are on one of the biggest stages possible and coming close to embarrassing themselves. They’re now down 0-2 in the ALCS to the Yankees and they’ve committed five errors, three in Game 1 and two in Game 2. The most egregious error ended Game 2 in the 13th when Maicer Izturis [...]
