As the rights to exclusive negotiations with their free agents closed, like every major league club, the Angels set their 40-Man Roster yesterday. It stands at 38. Here they are listed in order of the earliest that each can become a free agent. * means a club option exists for an extra year. After 2010 Brian Fuentes * Maicer Izturis Scot Shields After 2011 Bobby Abreu * Scott Kazmir * Gary Matthews...
Catcher defense is one of the more enigmatic areas of baseball study. It has developed relatively independently of other position player defensive analysis. This is probably because, although catchers field some ground balls and pop ups, their main defensive contribution is very different from that of all other position players. This contribution is mostly in preventing stolen bases, passed balls...

Below is a compilation of the Halos' best prospect performances going back to 2005. I give two run values for position players: the "+ bat" is how many more runs that prospect created over their league's average player according to a widely-used runs created formula. The "+ glove" is how many runs that player saved in the field according to Sean Smith's "TotalZone" defensive...
The Angels and Tigers have discussed a trade for center fielder Curtis Granderson, according to Ken Davidoff of Newsday. Davidoff says the Halos would use Granderson in left field and either shift Juan Rivera to DH or trade him. In my opinion, the Angels could fill several needs cheaply for the Tigers with players such as Mike Napoli and Brandon Wood. Davidoff adds that the Yankees "think very...

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the handbook, it's 95% stats with a little commentary thrown in. Ladies and gents, forces beyond my control — a late ballgame which I attended, an assignment to write our World Series preview, and the untimely crash of our servers while calculating the extremely slim likelihood that Mike Napoli would make an appearance in Game Six of the ALCS without getting a plate appearance — have [...]

The dubious umpiring continued in this series — this time it was strike calls. The Yankee fans, I understand, were upset about one in the sequence to Mark Teixeira early in the game, and then Lackey got riled about one to Jorge Posada in the seventh. Well, here's Teix (pitch 3 was a foul ball, incidentally): And here's Posada: So, yeah, I would say that Lackey had a legitimate beef with home...

I came across this interesting collection of photos posted by a young lady from San Diego who was hanging out with her girlfriends at Nationals Sports Bar on October 1, 2006. They sort of tell a story of what happens when you run into five Angels players in a sports bar. She even captioned a few of the photos and describes an altercation between Mike Napoli and Jeff Mathis which I found a little frightening....
West Des Moines' Tim McClelland made a couple of magnificent errors in calls at third base during Tuesday night's Yankees-Angels game. The first call came in the fourth inning with the Yankees Nick Swisher. Johnny Damon hit a fly to center and Swisher tagged up and scored, but the Angels appealed that Swisher left too early and McClelland called Swisher out. Replays showed McClelland was looking directly...
We all know it's been a tough post-season in baseball for the umpires, but what in the hell happened in the 5th inning of Yankee-Angel game last night? To recap: With one out in the top of the fifth inning, New York's Nick Swisher hit a ground ball back to Darren Oliver. The Angels pitcher immediately threw home and Jorge Posada was caught in a rundown as he tried to score from third. As catcher Mike...
