Here's a concern moving forward, unless the Mets are going to build an incredible offense to over compensate for a mediocre rotation they need a solid number two pitcher. I Don't see the Mets signing Matt Holliday, Bengie Molina, Orlando Hudson, Garret Atkins ( for the bench) and trading for Adrian Gonzalez, so the rotation will need to be addressed. As far as free agency, there is John Lackey who...

The Rockies traded aging reliever Luis Vizcaino for Jason Marquis and got a 3.8 WAR ($17.1MM), all-star season out of the veteran. The Dodger signed Wolf for $5 Million plus incentives and he produced a 3.0 WAR ($13.6MM) performance. Now, coming...

Yesterday, Metsblog reader “therambler” asked: “I’d be curious to know if you think an offer of Mike Pelfrey, Ike Davis, Reese Havens, and Fernando Martinez would be enough (or be too much) to get Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres? I think that it is a slightly better package than what the Red Sox would offer (probably [...]

Adam Rubin, in a post to his blog for the Daily News, is reporting that the Mets have now officially declined the option for reliever J.J. Putz. In addition, the Mets announced that they have exercised the $500,000 option on Mike Pelfrey.

If you are a Mets fan, you are all-too-familiar with: - Mike Pelfrey’s “yips” - Oliver Perez’s “Jekyll and Hyde” routine - Frequent mental lapses on the bases and in the field - Team-wide choking that led to late-season collapses in 2007 and 2008 - Finger-pointing and under-the-bus throwing by players These issues were running through my mind while having a [...]...

It seemed that Mike Pelfrey turned a corner the moment Dan Warthen became pitching coach in late June of 2008. When that fallacy is combined with his final numbers — a 13-11 record and 3.72 ERA — many believed Big Pelf had finally matured, and was on the verge of a “breakout season”. Indeed, some [...]

From the Mets, Bobby, we need you back…And if you’re not convinced that New York is where you belong, here’s some other reasons you may have missed: The Mets’ new alternate jerseys are less semen-colored than the Phillies’, and are even mildly reminiscent of the Chiba Lotte Marines. If you work for Baseball Tonight, Harold Reynolds will grope you like a breakfast shift...

by Jim Mone - AP View full size photo uploaded October 14, 2009 In 2009, the Mets were bereft of minor league depth. It was painfully obvious looking at Buffalo's performance and it became a major issue when injuries struck. Despite what some claim, however, developing prospects is not the only way to build good farm systems. Often those fringe players that never quite breakthrough to the show are...

As I said yesterday and still stand by my belief that the staff moves simply weren't enough. My biggest contention is with Dan Warthen who was unaware of Johan Santana pitching through discomfort and skipping side sessions since the All-Star break in a meaningless season. The regression of Mike Pelfrey, John Maine, K-Rod and Oliver Perez. Green was his prize success story dropping him down to a 3/4...

After the last game on Sunday, Jerry Manuel said the Mets need to do some "tweaking" for next year. The Mets need a lot more than tweaking, but you wouldn't know it from Monday's news about the coaching staff. So Razor Shines and Luis Alicea need to go because of all the baserunning miscues. It took Manuel all year to figure out that something was wrong with the coaching on the bases? Then...

In 2010 if I was a National League Franchise with aspiring playoff hopes there would be one single team I would want to avoid in the last week of September, the Florida Marlins. In the past three seasons the Marlins have found themselves out of the postseason race with but one motivating factor, to revel in the creation of misery for others. And they have done so for three straight years. 2007 The...

Mike Pelfrey will not pitch again this season, according to Jerry Manuel, who told reporters yesterday the pitcher will now have time to reflect on the season, “what was good and what he went through.” … i think this is one of the seasons for pelfrey, in which he might have taken one step back so [...]

In a recap of last night's game, Adam Rubin inserted a couple blurbs about the Mets ' backup middle infield situation next season: [Anderson] Hernandez has demonstrated he doesn’t have the aptitude to play shortstop at the major-league level—even if he could handle second base. This is true. Hernandez has looked terrible at shortstop and the numbers back it up: -16.1 UZR/150 and -18 plus-minus/150...

Nine baserunners in seven innings, three runs and just one walk. His groundball rate -- 13-to-6 -- was very strong. As others have pointed out, his season hasn't been as altogether awful as his superficial numbers...
