Weekend Mug 11/15

by Pat Sullivan - AP This dude hates Spaghettio's, and hates that you love them. View full size photo » Hello Kids! I see your Regular Dad has dropped you off at your Weekend Dad's doorstep. Apparently Mr. Fancypants has better things to do, than keeping you kids up to date about the Milwaukee Brewers this weekend. I have no idea what happened to your Regular Dad, one can only guess ... in any...

Somebody Get Me My Cardboard: Bob Wolfley Breaks It Down

Before I head out to the airport to meet Zach Grienke, I thought I'd pass along some Brewers professional sportswritery talk from Bob Wolfley, brought to you by the employers of Tom Haudricourt and Tony Witrado. (Ahh, read it anyway.) There are some interesting nuggets, such as: Baseball's best base-running leftfielder? Why, it's The Deputy. Only once in 2009 has Prince Fielder advanced from first...

Say, BCB looks kinda funny

More photos » by Stew Milne - AP This person has yet to unwrap the Christmas present of awesomeness that is the new BCB. Browse more photos » As you've probably figured out by now, the "visual refresh" KL mentioned in yesterday's Mug went through. Rest assured, your Firefox isn't broken. I dig the changes, actually, though our SBN overlords have more work to do: if you click on,...

Yosty! A Retrospective

As KL mentioned in Thursday's Mug , October 29, 2009 marked the seven-year anniversary of the hiring of former Brewers skipper Nedgar "Ned" Yost III. If Yost was known for anything during his extended run as Milwaukee's manager (besides, of course, his gross mismanagement of the bullpen and the fact that he started managing with two hands around his neck when the goin' got tough), it was...

The Thursday Thinker: On Managers

More photos » by Pat Sullivan - AP This guy is one of the seventeen managers in franchise history. How many of the other sixteen can you name? Browse more photos » I mentioned in this morning's Mug that today is the seventh anniversary of the hiring of Ned Yost. Yost was the fifteenth manager of seventeen in Brewer history. How many of the 17 can you name in five minutes? Again, here are...

I'm All For This Happening

Ned Yost is looking very nice these days, isn't he? I think he would look even nicer with that Houston Astros backdrop behind him during after every post-game interview (assuming it's not of him being edgy to reporters behind his desk in a cramped office). Yost came out of hiding to interview for the Houston Astros managerial position on Thursday, and he is one of ten guys in line for the

Odds & Ends: Cubs, Nationals, Myers, Hudson

A slew of Thursday night links from around the majors.... Jon Heyman of SI.com reports (via Twitter) that coveted hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo appears likely to join the Chicago Cubs. Byron Kerr of MASN.com doesn't expect Washington Nationals GM Mike Rizzo to name a new manager until at least November. According to MLB.com's Bill Ladson, the team will consider Chip Hale, Bobby Valentine, Bob Melvin,...

Odds & Ends: Heyward, Yankees, Astros

Some more afternoon links... Jason Heyward - probably the game's best prospect - looks great so far in the Arizona Fall League, according to Jason Grey of ESPN.com. MLB.com's Mike Bauman says so far the Yankees' decision to commit hundreds of millions to C.C. Sabathia and A.J. Burnett looks good. As Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle reports, Ned Yost stressed his experience during his interview...

Assorted rumblings from around the majors... Former MLB manager Ned Yost tells MLB.com's Alyson Footer that he thinks the Astros are just one starter away from having a quite a good rotation. (Footer agrees.) At the moment, the Astros have Roy Oswalt, Wandy Rodriguez, Brian Moehler, Bud Norris and Felipe Paulino. As Howard noted earlier, Yost is a candidate to manage the Astros next year. Former Nats...

Control the Transmission: What Do You Want on TV?

The standard TV introduction of a player at bat. I was watching a playoff game the other day and the introduction of a Dodgers hitter caught my eye. The standard AVG/HR/RBI numbers were displayed, but only for the series. I believe it said .222 (2 for 9), 0 HR, 1 RBI. The particulars aren't all that important. I wondered how many people found that graphic useful. It does give a quick snapshot of that...

Last Night's Action: A Sporting Smorgasbord

So much for the "action" part of this post. The only professional sporting involving a team from the area last night was an exhibition basketball game; the Wizards won -- Gilbert Arenas had 24 and Antawn Jamison had 15 and 11 -- but c'mon, who really cares about an exhibition NBA game? Yes, although October may be one of the best months on the national sporting calendar, we in Washington...
