Best & Worst In Hidden Value, 2009

Baseball players can make contributions in a number of different ways, the most obvious and talked-about of which is how they do at the plate. Defense, position, and baserunning tend to be brushed off as secondary concerns. What follows are the top and bottom 15 in the sum of these latter three values, as determined by UZR, Fangraphs' position adjustment, and Baseball Prospectus' EQBRR. Note that catchers...

Hunter Pence and the Astros Outfield Defense

More photos » by Pat Sullivan - AP Congrats to the second-best right fielder in the majors. Browse more photos » Don't know if you noticed, but Hunter Pence was a close second to Ichiro in the third annual Fielding Bible Awards , which were announced Monday. It was a nice finish for Pence, who has worked hard to turn himself into a very capable right fielder. Since Michael Bourn also finished...

Tuesday Nats Stats: How'd we do?

More photos » by Morry Gash - AP Not even Nyjer Morgan can outrun Pythagoras! Browse more photos » Well, it's the end of a long, bad season. Just how badly did we do? Back in June, I was seriously trying to figure out if the team was cursed , and we took a look at various measures of "luck." As you may recall, the Nats were both somewhat unlucky and a good bit of terrible. The...

Fangraphs Reinforces Just How Bad It's Been

R.J. Anderson at Fangraphs recently concluded his "How Are The Stars Being Acquired" series, looking at the top players in baseball by position and noting how they were acquired by their current team. The top 30 starting pitchers were ranked by xFIP, the top 15 relief pitchers by FIP and the top 10 at each position by WAR (minimum 300 plate appearances). Note that only 10 corner outfielders...

Winter roster moves and the 2010 season: Your thoughts?

It's a universally held notion that the Nats need to fix (replace?) the starting rotation before the 2010 season. The bullpen has some good pieces in MacDougal, Tyler Clippard and Sean Burnett so GM Mike Rizzo probably only needs to fill out the depth of the bullpen. We don't need another overhaul like we had twice this year. CF was a huge problem until the Nyjer Morgan trade. Likewise, 2B and/or SS...

Nats notes for 09.28.2009

A few things I wanted to post as we head into the final week of the season: Where to play Mike Morse? - The Post CF Nyjer Morgan is the Nats MVP , even though he only played 51 games? - The Wash. Times SS Cristian Guzman and reliever Sean Burnett might not play again in 2009 . In 2010, 3,300 seats will cost season ticketholders less money . There will be fewer premium seats as well. The Post &...

Not too many links here today, folks, so if you're looking for more reading check out the coverage from yesterday . Nationals News The Washington Times argues that Nyjer Morgan has been the MVP of the Nationals this season. Nats' MVP started at the top

Quick, who has been the Washington Nationals' MVP in 2009? Ryan Zimmerman? Adam Dunn? John Lannan? While there are certainly arguments to be made for any of those guys, there might actually be a stronger case for a position player who was with the team for only 51 games this season. Yes, Nyjer Morgan. Plain and simple, the Nationals were a much better team with Morgan and have been much worse without...

Proceed with caution

It's almost the close of the season -- hurry up, close of the season! -- and the next loss will be the one hundredth. Again. Surely, better times are ahead. How can they not be? On the Die Hard scale, we're about at the point where John McClane drags himself into the bathroom and picks glass out of his bloodied feet. You don't think it can get too much worse than that, and any additional bad news,...

Morning links: Lastings' impression

By Dejan Kovacevic | 12:40 a.m. Tuesday I hate positive-spin game stories about losses. Always have. So, in that context, please know in advance that, tempting as it was to write for the umpteenth time that the Pirates' offense is wretched, I passed and instead focused on how Lastings Milledge clearly has grown up in recent weeks, as a player and as a person. It was not just the breathtaking catch...
