Saturday Rockpile: Rockies retain Phillips, protect five prospects by adding to 40-man roster

More photos » by David Zalubowski - AP Browse more photos » Phillips is in the fold - The Denver Post The Rox signed Paul Phillips to a hefty $13,000/month contract yesterday, which gives the Rockies a contingency plan in the event that Yorvit Torrealba is lost to free agency and Michael McKenry doesn't become superman in Spring Training (which I have a good feeling he won't do, although...

Free agent rankings hurt middle relievers

After looking at the free agent class of setup men, last weekend, I thought that “the ideal solution is for the guys already on the roster…to step up and take the late innings.” I based that conclusion mainly on the strength of the middle relievers on the market. The only attractive name is Rafael Betancourt, [...] Post from: River Ave. Blues A New York Yankees blog Free agent rankings...

The State of the Rockies: A Sane Free Agency Preview

Ladies and Gentlemen, the siren of the MLB free agency period once again beckons, luring unsuspecting baseball fans into wrecking their ships against the sharp jagged rocks--in this case dreams of big-ticket free agents for even the smallest markets, ill-conceived trade schemes, and long soliloquies about why the owner/GM/beat writer is a complete and utter moron. This column, my dear friends, is the...

Shore up the Pen

Alright, so I know most of the discussion so far about the offseason has involved our free agents ( John Lackey , Chone Figgins , Vladimir Guerrero , and Darren Oliver ), big hitting free agents ( Jason Bay & Matt Holliday ), and trades (anyone remember a discussion about Curtis Granderson ?), but there has not been much discussion about other free agents on the market which could really help our...

In most industries, being ranked among the top 20 percent of performers would be an honor, and you would be in line for a raise. Not in Major League Baseball. Earlier this month the Elias Sports Bureau released its free-agent rankings, and those who rate in the top 20 percent of players at their position are rated "Type A" free agents, while those who fall in the next 20 percent are rated...

Yanks interested in Rafael Betancourt?

In Troy E. Renck’s (Denver Post) latest, he discusses veteran right-hander Rafael Betancourt, who recently became a free agent after the Rockies declined his $5.4 million option a few days ago. Renck makes it clear that Rockies will likely try to renegotiate with Betancourt so as to sign him to a multiyear deal, however, towards [...]

Renck: Rockies' strategy with Betancourt risky, yet clever

Didn't agree. Not one bit. When the Rockies declined reliever Rafael Betancourt's $5 million option last week, making him a free agent, I cringed.

Sunday Rockpile: What the Mets can learn from the late Larry Walker-era Rockies

More photos » by Rob Carr - ASSOCIATED PRESS He doesn't wear #33, but something about Carlos Beltran's situation should be familiar to Rockies fans.
