After looking at the free agent class of setup men, last weekend, I thought that “the ideal solution is for the guys already on the roster…to step up and take the late innings.” I based that conclusion mainly on the strength of the middle relievers on the market. The only attractive name is Rafael Betancourt, [...] Post from: River Ave. Blues A New York Yankees blog Free agent rankings...

Ladies and Gentlemen, the siren of the MLB free agency period once again beckons, luring unsuspecting baseball fans into wrecking their ships against the sharp jagged rocks--in this case dreams of big-ticket free agents for even the smallest markets, ill-conceived trade schemes, and long soliloquies about why the owner/GM/beat writer is a complete and utter moron. In most industries, being ranked among the top 20 percent of performers would be an honor, and you would be in line for a raise. Not in Major League Baseball. Earlier this month the Elias Sports Bureau released its free-agent rankings, and those who rate in the top 20 percent of players at their position are rated "Type A" free agents, while those who fall in the next 20 percent are rated...

In Troy E. Renck’s (Denver Post) latest, he discusses veteran right-hander Rafael Betancourt, who recently became a free agent after the Rockies declined his $5.4 million option a few days ago. Renck makes it clear that Rockies will likely try to renegotiate with Betancourt so as to sign him to a multiyear deal, however, towards [...]

Didn't agree. Not one bit. When the Rockies declined reliever Rafael Betancourt's $5 million option last week, making him a free agent, I cringed.

Rockies decline option on Betancourt According to Ed Price of AOL FanHouse (thru Twitter/MLB Trade Rumors), the Rox have declined Rafael Betancourt's $5.4 million option. The club is apparently still trying to work out a deal. We'll be keeping an eye on this up until December, when the Rockies will decide whether or not to offer arbitration.
