I was thinking about Chase Utley’s chances to make the Hall of Fame recently. As you are likely aware, he got a late start to his career, earning a regular starting job in 2005 when Placido Polanco was traded to the Detroit Tigers (for Ugueth Urbina and Ramon Martinez). While we are certainly enjoying Utley’s everyday [...]

I have to admit I was a big supporter of Wilson Valdez, he was a solid defensive back-up at 2B/SS and had a great arm. Valdez was an all glove no bat but I believe you need a defensive infielder like that in case of injuries or if you have a poor fielder, you can bring them in late in a game to hold the lead. Valdez was a defensive up grade over Argenis Reyes and Ramon Martinez and much cheaper then...

This entry is part 31 in the series 2009 Mets EvaluationsWhen the backup (Ramon Martinez) to the backup (Alex Cora) went down, the Mets found themselves hunting the scrap yards for a fill-in at shortstop who had Major League skills. They found Wilson Valdez and, all things considered, could’ve done a lot worse. In fact, [...]

Alex Cora and Ramon Martinez have filed for free agency. Cora played in 82 games with the Mets and hit .251 with one home run and 18 RBI, missing a significant portion of the season due to a torn ligament in his thumb. Martinez injured his hand sliding into home plate in early June after initially replacing [...]

You may be wondering why we’re wasting precious space and bandwidth on Ramon Martinez. Some of you may even be shocked to know we’re referring to a nondescript utility infielder and not Pedro’s older brother. Well I’m wondering why Ramon Martinez ever suited up for the Mets in 2009. In fact I’m wondering why he was [...]

Poseidon's Fist, in his series preview this afternoon, pointed out that the Dodgers had a history of being swept in their final series with the division on the line. Unfortunately, the Rockies also have a history of not getting the sweep or even 2-1 series win needed to win the division in the last (or second to the last) series. It seems the franchise has thus far made a habit of settling for second...

Inspired by this post at Gas Lamp Ball ( ed note: "inspired by" is just a nice way of saying "stolen from" ), and with a lot of help from the Internet Anagram Server , I managed to kill quite a bit of time this weekend. I plugged all of the 2009 Mets into the old anagram machine and here are the results. Feel free to try it yourself and post any other good ones in the comments....

These two series with the Mets certainly looked a lot bigger when the schedule was released than they do now. The Mets DO have David Wright back, but they’re still missing Reyes, Delgado, and their best player, Carlos Beltran. Something tells me Wright is defying Jeff Francoeur and is wearing the new helmet now. It will be very entertaining to see what team pays money for Francoeur this offseason,...
