Polly Want A Cracker?

Numerous sources have the Phillies close to signing Placido "Polly" Polanco to a 2 year $10-12M deal to play 3rd base. Baseball gurus such as ESPN's Jayson Stark, FOX's Ken Rosenthal, as well as Phillies' own Todd Zolecki have confirmed this. In my opinion Polanco seems to be the best cost effective alternative at 3rd base. Chone Figgins is ideal, but is out of the Phillies price range. Adrian...

Will Utley Make the Hall?

I was thinking about Chase Utley’s chances to make the Hall of Fame recently. As you are likely aware, he got a late start to his career, earning a regular starting job in 2005 when Placido Polanco was traded to the Detroit Tigers (for Ugueth Urbina and Ramon Martinez). While we are certainly enjoying Utley’s everyday [...]

Wilson Valdez becomes a Philly...

I have to admit I was a big supporter of Wilson Valdez, he was a solid defensive back-up at 2B/SS and had a great arm. Valdez was an all glove no bat but I believe you need a defensive infielder like that in case of injuries or if you have a poor fielder, you can bring them in late in a game to hold the lead. Valdez was a defensive up grade over Argenis Reyes and Ramon Martinez and much cheaper then...

2009 Analysis: Wilson Valdez

This entry is part 31 in the series 2009 Mets EvaluationsWhen the backup (Ramon Martinez) to the backup (Alex Cora) went down, the Mets found themselves hunting the scrap yards for a fill-in at shortstop who had Major League skills. They found Wilson Valdez and, all things considered, could’ve done a lot worse. In fact, [...]

2009 Analysis: Ramon Martinez

You may be wondering why we’re wasting precious space and bandwidth on Ramon Martinez. Some of you may even be shocked to know we’re referring to a nondescript utility infielder and not Pedro’s older brother. Well I’m wondering why Ramon Martinez ever suited up for the Mets in 2009. In fact I’m wondering why he was [...]

Game #160: Ubaldo Jimenez vs. Randy Wolf

Poseidon's Fist, in his series preview this afternoon, pointed out that the Dodgers had a history of being swept in their final series with the division on the line. Unfortunately, the Rockies also have a history of not getting the sweep or even 2-1 series win needed to win the division in the last (or second to the last) series. It seems the franchise has thus far made a habit of settling for second...
