An Interview with Tampa Bay Rays Director of Pro Scouting Matt Arnold

More photos » by Gene J. Puskar - AP Arnold has ties to newly-acquired Rays reliever, Ramon Ramirez. Browse more photos » A few weeks ago, the Rays quietly (is there any other way the Rays announce things') announced a couple staff moves for the upcoming season. One of the moves that intrigued me was the promotion of Matt Arnold to the newly created position of Director of Pro Scouting....

Links: Arbitration, winter league prospects, etc

The Extra Bases blog lists those players who are eligible for salary arbitration this offseason: Jonathan Papelbon, Ramon Ramirez, Hideki Okajima, Jeremy Hermida, Casey Kotchman, Manny Delcarmen, Fernando Cabrera and Brian Anderson. Boston must offer them a contract by December 12, or else they become non-tendered free agents. They consider Cabrera and Anderson likely to be [...]

Sports Redux: Don't Look Now, C's Lose

(AP Photo/Charles Krupa) Atlanta's coach Mike Woodson viewed this game as a measuring stick for his squad. The Hawks measured up well with the Celtics and won, 97-86. Atlanta led 72-70 after three quarters and outscored the veteran C's crew 25-16 in the fourth. Former Celtics player Joe Johnson led the Hawks with 24 points. Jamal Crawford added 18 points. Paul Pierce led Boston with 24. Pierce went...

Tuesday AM Links

Some links for Tuesday… Mack Avenue Tigers checks out the Tigers’ arbitration dos and don’ts. Bill Conlin feels that the Phillies disrespected Pedro Feliz by not picking up his option. The Rays, as expected, picked up Carl Crawford’s 2010 option. The team declined options on Brian Shouse and Greg Zaun, though, and claimed reliever Ramon Ramirez off of [...]

Rays Exercise Carl Crawford's Option, Decline Gregg Zaun and Brian Shouse's, and Claim Ramon Ramirez Off Waivers from Cincy

Nothing unexpected on the options part. Although it will be interesting to see if they attempt to get Zaun to re-sign. Ramirez is a 27-year-old righty from the Cincinnati organization and 39.3 career innings in the Majors. That's a pretty small sample size to draw from, but during his time he posted a 4.6 FIP and 5.1 tRA. His home run per fly ball percentage is awfully high for a reliever (just over...

Not cuckoo for Coco

Patience is a virtue: looking back at the Ramon Ramirez trade

And Only Scarcely Less Believable: Angels 5, Red Sox 0

This one irritated me right from the start; I'm a notoriously cranky guy, and whether it was forgetting my regular glasses in the car (I had to watch a night game through sunglasses, grr , because there's no reentry for postseason games!) or forgetting to bring my charged spare battery for the camera (I got maybe a couple dozen pointless photos before it ran out of juice), there was an awful lot to...

Baldelli Out; Anderson & Gathright In

Rocco Baldelli will not be active for the ALDS with the Angels, due to his hip flexor problem. He will be eligible for the ALCS should the Red Sox advance. That means that Brian Anderson and Joey Gathright will be on the roster. Anderson has a terrific glove but absolutely no stick. Neither are a big threat off the bench, so Baldelli's presence will be missed. Here is the final Red Sox ALDS roster:...
