MLive.com 's Steve Kornacki was the one voter who put Justin Verlander on the top of his AL Cy Young Award ballot. (25 went to the winner, K.C.'s Zack Greinke , with two going to Seattle's Felix Hernandez .) Kornacki based his vote on Verlander showing toughness under pennant race pressure, something Greinke and Hernandez didn't have to worry about. Jason Beck transcribed highlights from last night's...

He polled no votes at all. Not a sausage. Bugger all. He didn't get a whole lot of love from the Baseball Writers Association of America but he gets some here in another installment of the Batter's Box POTD . Ricky Romero delivers a pitch against Seattle in his final 2009 start at Rogers Centre September 24th. He gave up three runs over 6 1/3 innings in a no-decision but the Jays wound up losing to...

The A's, who've had as many ROY winners as anyone over the last 15 years, have produced yet another bright youngster who won the honor on Monday, edging out Texas' Elvis Andrus and Detroits ' Rick Porcello for the award. This has to be especially rewarding for Bailey, because unlike the other top candidates, he wasn't handed a clear-cut role out of spring. He came into the year as a middle reliever,...

So, MLB’s Rookie of the Year awards were given out today, and Gordon Beckham finished fifth in the American League voting, behind Andrew Bailey, Elvis Andrus, Rick Porcello and Jeff Niemann. Bailey seems to be a bit of an upset win, but he did put up some ridiculous numbers this year. From Sports Illustrated’s Tom [...]

So the announcement is out, and Elvis Andrus finished second in the Rookie of the Year balloting , finishing behind Andrew Bailey , who came in first place, and ahead of third place finisher Rick Porcello . Disappointing that Andrus didn't win, but Bailey is a worthy choice as well, and it is impressive that Andrus finished as high as he did, given that his offensive numbers weren't overwhelming...it...

Rick Porcello Finishes 3rd in Rookie of the Year Vote Jason Beck reports on his blog that Detroit Tigers rookie pitcher Rick Porcello finished third in AL Rookie of the Year voting. Oakland closer Andrew Bailey (13 first-place votes) was the winner (which, to me, is kind of a surprise). Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus finished second. Porcello received seven first-place votes, but eight writers left him...

According to reports, Oakland A's relief pitcher Andrew Bailey is the American League Rookie of the Year, receiving 13 of 28 first-place votes and 88 points. Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus was the runner-up with 65 points, one ahead of Detroit Tigers RHSP Rick Porcello. I think they got the top three right, but frankly, I would have gone Andrus-Porcello-Bailey or even Porcello-Andrus-Bailey....

I thought I'd take the time to let all of you know that Gordon Beckham did not win the AL Rookie of the Year Award today. The winner was just announced a minute ago, and it was Oakland Athletics closer Andrew Bailey. I'm not exactly surprised by any of this, even if Bacon did win the Sporting News Award, but I thought it would be going to Detroit's Rick Porcello or Texas' Elvis Andrus.

by Jeff Fletcher Filed under: Athletics , MLB Awards For the second time in five years, an A's closer has won the American League Rookie of the Year, but this one came as a bit of a surprise. DETROIT – The AL Central showdown was put on hold. Steady rain Monday night postponed the opener of a crucial four-game series between the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins. The first-place Tigers lead the Twins by two games with seven to play. The rainout will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader Tuesday. Minnesota first baseman Michael Cuddyer thought it was the right call. "We didn't...
