Wilson & Mariners agree to $10 million, 2-yr deal

SEATTLE – After shortstop Jack Wilson arrived in Seattle in a trade last summer, it didn't take long for him to know he wanted to stay. "About an hour, hour and a half," Wilson said by telephone with a chuckle from his home in Southern California on Friday. Now he has 10 million more reasons to love Seattle. The 31-year-old defensive whiz signed a $10 million, two-year contract with

Mariners keep Wilson in Seattle through 2011

The Mariners will keep shortstop Jack Wilson in Seattle through 2011. The team announced a new two-year contract Friday with the 30-year-old shortstop. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Wilson was acquired from Pittsburgh on July 29, along with pitcher Ian Snell, for infielder Ronny Cedeno, catcher Jeff Clement and three minor league pitchers. In 31 games Wilson hit .224 with one home run....

Wilson stays with Seattle for $10 million

By Dejan Kovacevic | 4:58 p.m. Friday Jack Wilson stayed with Seattle after signing a two-year, $10 million extension today. "It's a good deal, a good situation," Wilson just said. "I think they're going to be aggressive here in putting together a good team, and I'm really happy to be part of that." Wilson was the Pirates' shortstop most of the past decade. The Pirates will remain...

Points Of Contention: Jack Wilson's Offense

When the Mariners traded for Jack Wilson , we knew it a move fueled by defense. The front office and coaching staff made no secret of that. Wilson brought a glove, an excellent glove capable of making up for a lackluster bat, and this was okay, because we knew that he'd be able to field while remaining something above a black hole at the plate. However, over the span of the next six weeks, Wilson would...

Really? The Brewers didn’t want Matt Capps?

On Friday, the Brewers sent shortstop J.J. Hardy to Minnesota for OF Carlos Gomez. Turns out that the Pirates were in the Hardy sweepstakes as well–looking to upgrade from Ronny Cedeno at short. The Bucs offered Matt Capps to the Brew Crew. Gomez, Hardy, and Capps are all coming off down seasons, so I suppose it [...]

Wilson, Seattle talking extension

By Dejan Kovacevic | 3:49 p.m. Friday Jack Wilson, the Pirates' shortstop most of this decade, is discussing a multiyear extension with Seattle that would keep him from becoming a free agent. The Mariners are believed to have offered a two-year contract worth more than the two-year offer the Pirates made Wilson -- $8 million -- shortly before trading him July 29. Wilson has an $8.4 million club option...

Pirates Talk: Iwamura, Ankiel, Wilson

As usual, Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has the latest on the Pirates... The Akinori Iwamura addition does not necessarily mean more significant moves are coming. The Pirates are comfortable with their internal options. The Pirates intend to inquire on Rick Ankiel when free agency begins. Moreso than Chris Bootcheck, perhaps this is a sign that the team is not letting bad blood linger...

Morning links: Manage expectations

By Dejan Kovacevic | 12:40 a.m. Wednesday Chuck Finder had to take a couple days off, and I agreed to cover for him in the unlikely event that anything happened. Oh, well. I do have a few other points I want to make, culled from conversations I had yesterday about the Akinori Iwamura trade, and coming up with a spontaneous set of Morning Links seems as a good an avenue as any: > Do not assume that...
