News: Phillies sign Ross Gload for their Bench

The Phillies have signed Ross Gload to a two-year contract, according to MLB.com. The 33–year-old Gload hit .261 last season for the Marlins, but had a .318 average as a pinch hitter, while batting .271 against right-handed pitching. Gload has played first base and all three outfield positions during his career. Earlier tonight, FoxSports.com said Gload deciding between [...]

Marlins Do Not Offer Arb To Calero, Nick Johnson

The Marlins did not offer arbitration to Type B free agents Kiko Calero and Nick Johnson, nor did they offer to Brendan Donnelly or Ross Gload, tweets Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. Calero merited consideration after posting a 10.4 K/9 and 1.95 ERA in 60 innings, but apparently the Marlins did not want to risk giving him a raise on this year's $500K salary. It's a similar story for Johnson, whose...

Kiko Calero is gone

It seems that Kiko Calero 's performance last season means he won't be a Marlin in 2010 . Don't look for the Marlins to offer salary arbitration to any of their four free agents -- Kiko Calero, Brendan Donnelly , Ross Gload and Nick Johnson -- at Tuesday's deadline. However, the Marlins remain very much interested in re-signing Gload to a two-year deal similar to the one granted last year to his mirror...

Could Calero set-up

Of all the areas that the Mets need to address, the most stable is the pen, if the Mets are confident that one of Bobby Parnell, Brain Stokes and Sean Green can step up to be the set-up man, then they may only need a left handed specialist. However, if they look outside of the organization for a set-up man a player they've been interested in before who has served as a set-up man maybe available at...

Long Overdue Applesauce - Mets may play in Puerto Rico, Sheets and Guillen rumors, Marlins may trade Johnson

Meet the Mets MLB is hoping to get the Mets to agree to play some of their road games against the Marlins in Puerto Rico. Other names mentioned include Pineiro, Marquis, and Wolf . News that the Mets might...

Marlins make an offer to Ross Gload

The Marlins looked it over and wondered if they could get Ross Gload for Wes Helms money . The Marlins have extended an offer to Ross Gload , their top left-handed hitter off the bench last season when he led the majors in pinch hits. The offer is thought to be similar to the one received last year by Wes Helms , who agreed to a two-year deal for $1.9 million. Gload said toward he end of the season...

Marlins Rumors: Gload, Paulino

After declining his option earlier in the month, the Florida Marlins have offered Ross Gload a lesser contract, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. Spencer indicates the offer is similar to the one that Wes Helms signed with the Marlins last winter, which was a two-year deal worth $1.9MM. The option that the Marlins turned down was for $2.6MM. Gload hit .261/.329/.400 as a pinch-hitter...

Marlins Decline Option On Ross Gload

The Marlins have declined Ross Gload's 2010 option according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro. Had the team picked up the option, Gload would have made $2.6MM next season. He did not receive a buyout, according to information provided at Cot's Baseball Contracts. The 33-year-old Gload hit .261/.329/.400 in 259 plate appearances last year, but the lefty swinger excelled off the bench, hitting .318/.418/.455...

Marlins file for free agency

All of the Marlins eligible for free agency have filed, as expected . Nick Johnson made an impact with the Marlins. But unless Florida works out a contract with the veteran, those 35 games may be the extent of Johnson's tenure with the organization. Johnson formally filed for free agency on Friday, along with reliever Kiko Calero , who became a valuable performer in the back end of the bullpen. The...

Get Those Extra Checks Ready for Miguel Olivo, Willie Bloomquist, and Jamey Wright Please

Earlier this season we touched on Dayton Moore's odd proclivity for the playing time bonus . Dating back to the Ross Gload extension, the Royals have included a number of playing time escalators in contracts. Like anything else in a contract, these bonuses can be used in a variety of ways, for the benefit or protection of either party. Three curious things jump out about Dayton's recent use of the...

Helms and teammate Ross Gload, who has 21 pinch-hits, need one more between them to tie the major-league record for most pinch-hits by a tandem. ``It means a lot to us because that's been our role this year,'' Helms said.

Ross Gload - Marlins Pinch Hitting King

Last night Ross Gload set the single-season record for pinch hits by a Marlin . Ross Gload delivered his 20th pinch hit, a single off Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth, setting a new single-season team record. Gload and teammate Wes Helms need to combine on three more pinch hits to tie the single-season major league record by a pair of teammates. The Grits rarely disappoint. Congratulations Ross!
