Pittsburgh Pirates starter Ross Ohlendorf majored in Operations Research and Financial Engineering at Princeton, a major that combined mathematics, engineering and economics, so it’s safe to say Xbox and cleavage diving with Nick Swisher won’t be cutting it for him during the offseason. Turns out the promising young starter, who runs a longhorn-cattle business with [...]

By Dejan Kovacevic | 6:23 p.m. Monday The Pirates are one of several teams interested in pitcher Justin Duchscherer, one of Major League Baseball's more intriguing free agents this winter. Duchscherer, 32, made an exceptional debut as a starter in 2008 with Oakland, 10-8 with a 2.54 ERA, but he did not throw a pitch for the Athletics last season after surgery on his hip and elbow, then a diagnosis...

Remember Ross Ohlendorf? Sure you do, he was sent to Pittsburgh in the Nady/Marte deal in 2008. After a decent 2009 season starting for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Ohlendorf is taking a different course this offseason as compared to other Major League players. Apparently, Ohlendorf in his quest to further educate himself, is interning at the United [...]

My retirement was a well-planned and-- for me, at least-- a fairly joyous occasion. I eased myself out of the company over a six month period and even made a made a world tour to say good-bye to our affiliates in London, Hamburg, Paris, Milan, Bangkok, Tokyo and Hong Kong. There was a farewell party on the patio and I got my first watch since college, a Girard-Perregaux Subsequent retirements weren't...

Hope everyone is enjoying their leftovers so far. Some pretty good stuff out there in the last few days. Take a look. Meet the Mets Doesn't this Jose Guillen rumor sound like exactly the sort of thing the Mets would do? There are some strong performances to report in off-season play. Tobi Stoner is turning some heads and might be a consideration for the rotation . Josh Thole continues to rake and Lance...

By Dejan Kovacevic | 12:40 a.m. Saturday In the past, I have saved questions for the readership for Saturdays, figuring it was the best chance to get the input of regulars, and this is no exception: What would you like to see from the Post-Gazette now and into 2010? We have some plans afoot, I can tell you, but nothing so definitive that they are not open to input. Not looking for specific story suggestions...

Pirates starter Ross Ohlendorf shows up every day at the office for his internship in a kind of throwback to earlier times when baseball players had to supplement their income working offseason jobs.

An e-mail requesting an internship arrived at the Agriculture Department this summer with an impressive resume: Princeton University degree in operations research and financial engineering, 3.8 college GPA, 1520 SATs. Ross Ohlendorf didn’t mention his 95 mph sinking fastball, but it probably wouldn’t have hurt his chances.

Sorry for the absence of updates the past few days; it can be hard to post when there isn't much news coming out. Anyway, there was some interesting discussion of the BA top prospects here , and the basic take-away criticism (particularly from Mike Emeigh, a smart long-time Pirates fan and critic) is that the Pirates' farm system still isn't that strong yet. If you look only at the ten-player list...

A fresh batch of links for Saturday afternoon... According to John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus, Pirates right-hander Ross Ohlendorf missed arbitration eligibility by just two days. On the other hand, as Perrotto notes, right-hander Jeff Karstens is eligible for arbitration. Marty Noble of MLB.com fielded a ton of hot stove-related questions from Mets fans for his latest "Inbox" article....

Granted, I have no idea if any of the other 29 teams have a guy like this, but I’m willing to bet they don’t. Ross Ohlendorf is a ridiculously smart dude. You probably knew he went to Princeton. You might have even heard of his legendary senior thesis. If you’re a huge Ross the Boss [...]

by Jack Dempsey - AP Is J.A. Happ a one year wonder? View full size photo uploaded October 22, 2009 Yesterday I posted an article discussing the pitchers with the best FIP, or Fielding Independent Pitching, which aims to give fantasy/roto owners a clearer picture of how well, or not so well, a pitcher performed in 2009. Today I give you the pitchers whose FIP was higher than their ERA in 2009, who...

Just a reminder, it's important. A significant amount of a pitcher's value is tied to his ability to hit, which we have a pretty good idea how to measure. Yet for some reason we leave hitting production out of our pitcher valuations. So I'll add StatCorner's pitching runs above average, hitting runs above average using a wOBA around .180 as average, and I might as well include the +/- fielding runs...
