Shore up the Pen

Alright, so I know most of the discussion so far about the offseason has involved our free agents ( John Lackey , Chone Figgins , Vladimir Guerrero , and Darren Oliver ), big hitting free agents ( Jason Bay & Matt Holliday ), and trades (anyone remember a discussion about Curtis Granderson ?), but there has not been much discussion about other free agents on the market which could really help our...

Odds & Ends: Lackey, Phillies, Mets, Greinke

Here's another collection of links... Larry LaRue of The News Tribune writes about why you shouldn't get your hopes up about Seattle landing John Lackey, if you're a Mariners fan. Andy Martino of The Philadephia Inquirer says that it's clear the Phillies want to add a free agent reliever or two, although GM Ruben Amaro said that Scott Eyre "may have priced himself out of our range.” The...

Zolecki says that if Eyre doesn't retire, the left-hander only wants to pitch for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2010. We heard earlier in the season that Eyre was leaning towards retiring, but Philadelphia's playoff run rejuvenated his interest in continuing his career. The team...

Odds & Ends: Cubs, Cuddyer, Eyre, Marlins

Let's check out a few Saturday evening links.... Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune writes that the Chicago Cubs seem prepared to part ways with Rich Harden and Reed Johnson. ESPN.com's Rob Neyer isn't a big fan of the Minnesota Twins' decision to exercise Michael Cuddyer's 2011 option. Potential free agent Scott Eyre will have surgery on his left elbow, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. Zolecki...

Lidge, Eyre, Ibanez To Have Surgery

Brad Lidge, Scott Eyre and Raul Ibanez will each have surgery next week. It turns out that Lidge was injured this year, but it’s not his knee. On Wednesday, Lidge will have surgery to repair loose bodies in his elbow. In addition, he will need to have his flexor/pronator tendon examined. If Lidge’s tendon is okay, then [...]

Friday: No rest, a couple of tests, for the weary

In addition to Raul Ibanez (groin/abdomen) and Scott Eyre (elbow), who will be reexamined for previously known ailments, 2009 bust Brad Lidge will also have his elbow tested for loose bodies, the Phillies announced. In other news, the Phillies have picked up Cliff Lee’s option for 2010. No surprise there. Meanwhile, they have until Monday to decide whether they exercise Pedro Feliz’s $5...

Phillies pick up Cliff Lee's 2010 option

A full year against National League batters? Yes please! (AP Photo) This was expected but today the Phillies made the inevitable move. Todd Zolecki reports ( via Twitter ) that the Phillies have picked up the option for 2010 on Cliff Lee 's existing contract. Scott Mathieson added to 40-man roster

Small bit of news today for the Phillies as the off-season officially gets underway, unfortunately. According to beat reporters Scott Lauber ( link ), Todd Zolecki ( link ) and Susan Lulgjuraj ( link ) right handed pitcher Scott Mathieson (pictured) has been added to the 40-man roster. What this means is that he would not be available for a team to acquire him through a Rule 5 draft. Mathieson is a...
