Red Reposter - Where Were You When You Heard The Reds Re-signed Ramon Hernandez?

More photos » by David J. Phillip - AP Ramon Hernandez will be back next year, but could that affect the contract status of guys like Jonny Gomes and Jared Burton? Browse more photos » Hall o' Famer Hal weighs in with his opinion on the Hernandez signing and he does little to convince me. "Hernandez hit only .258 last year with five homers and 37 RBIs, but...(he) is the kind of guy...

The Season That Was: Edwin Encarnacion

More photos » by Reinhold Matay - AP Looks good fielding this ball. (AP Photo/Reinhold Matay) Browse more photos » Edwin had a good season in 2008, hitting .251/.340/.466 with 26 home runs in 506 at bats for Cincinnati. It was pretty much in line with the two seasons he had before. 2009 should have been a good year since he was just 26. But he had a sore wrist starting in spring training....

Jeff Zimmerman's UZR projections

Jeff Zimmerman's UZR projections Jeff Zimmerman posted his 2010 UZR projections. I haven't completely worked through his methodology, but the results seem pretty reasonable. Here are the main Reds of interest: Joey Votto: +2 Brandon Phillips: +7 Paul Janish: +4 (sample size may pull him down a bit) Scott Rolen: +7 Chris Dickerson: +1 in CF, +1 in LF (usually a 10-run difference per season between those...

Wells' Wrist Well Again

The wrist surgery for Vernon Wells went "well" ( get it ?) according to bluejays.com's Jordan Bastian . The 30 year-old center fielder is expected to be ready for the start of spring training next year. Vernon Wells leads off from second base during a game against Baltimore August 9th. Wells chased reliever Matt Albers from the game with an RBI single in the seventh to score Adam Lind in...

3B Trade Possibilities, Vol. 1

Scott Rolen, Cincinnati Reds – I’ve heard that the Reds are contemplating making a major push in 2010, but if they don’t land the big time pieces they’re seeking they’ll look to cut costs and move Rolen (among others). They’ll have a hard time getting back the same type of haul they gave up for [...]

Analyzing the Third Base Candidates: Free Agents

by Ben Margot - AP Could Adrian Beltre be manning the hot corner for the Phillies next year? (AP Photo/Ben Margot) View full size photo » The 2010 Philadelphia Phillies aren't likely to be all that dissimilar from the 2009 version that came within two wins of taking home back-to-back World Series titles; 7 of the 8 starting field players return, along with the top 4 starters and much of the bullpen....

Evan Longoria Wins Gold Glove; Carl Crawford & B.J. Upton Robbed Once More

More photos » by Charles Krupa - AP Browse more photos » What I'm about to say has absolutely no bearing on Evan Longoria 's accomplishment. He is one of the few winners of the mark of "defensive excellence" that actually deserves to be crowned. Here's what the Rays presser had on Longo: "It's the one award that I've wanted to win since I started pro ball," Longoria...

Twigs For the Stove

First off, congratulations to the Yankees. I’m not a Yankee hater, due to their tradition mainly. I’m not big on the fact that they spent so much and won, but when you look at how often they spent a ton and lost, you can see that’s not completely the reasoning. Besides, it’s been nine years. While that’s not that long for a lot of teams, it does mean that there’s...

Wells & Encarnacion To Undergo Wrist Surgery

The National Post is reporting that center fielder Vernon Wells and third baseman Edwin Encarnacion will have wrist surgery this off-season. This isn't the first time Wells has had wrist problems. He broke his left wrist while making a diving catch during a game against Cleveland in May of 2008 and has also been plagued with hamstring problems the past two seasons. The 30 year-old Wells hit .260/.311/.400...

Let’s do the time WARP!

Baseball Prospectus has a metric called Wins Above Replacement Player, which (ideally) should be a pretty straightforward proposition. But let's look at a few things. I have a collection of sortable WARP1 reports from October 9th, covering 1996-2009. How does it match up what's currently on the site? Currently, BPro says Vlad was worth 59.1 WARP1 in that timespan . Based on what was reported on the...
