Shoulda mentioned this earlier: The Reds announced three minor roster moves on Monday, including agreeing to terms on a Minor League contract with utility man Wilkin Castillo. … Unlike Castillo, outfielder Darnell McDonald has chosen to look elsewhere for playing time in 2010. The Reds announced on Monday that McDonald, who was outrighted off the 40-man roster [...]

Travis Wood (Photo by BubbaFan) View full size photo uploaded October 22, 2009 When the season ended, the Reds had a full 40-man roster plus 4 players on the 60-day DL who did not count toward the 40-man roster. In the next couple of weeks those 4 players ( Mike Lincoln , Edinson Volquez , Wilkin Castillo, and Danny Richar ) will lose their 60-day status and will have to be moved back to the 40-man...

John Fay lists his top trade candidates in his blog, and I think it's a good list: 1. Arthur Rhodes, 2. David Weathers, 3. Bronson Arroyo, 4. Aaron Harang, 5. Francisco Cordero, 6. Jerry Hairston. I think it's a pretty good list, though I would move Hairston up to #4 on it. With the money owed Cordero, I think he'd be a tough trade, and is therefore less likely to go. But, a lot of teams are seeking...

The word on the 40-man roster spot is in: Wilkin Castillo was transferred to the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list, effectively making a merry-go-round with Edwin Encarnacion going from the 60-day to the active roster, and Danny Richar from the roster to the 15-day DL. Players on the 60-day disabled list do not count against the 40-man roster limit of players the major league team can...

Rebecca Glass, blogger at This Purist Bleeds Pinstripes , asked several bloggers to rate their GM for a piece on her blog. Since it would be a shame to write for her and not put it here, here follows my look at Walt Jocketty: The Cincinnati Reds' General Manager is Walt Jocketty...who is better known as the long-time GM of the St. Louis Cardinals, before he was pushed out in a St. Louis power play....

In a minor league deal, the Reds swapped off Norris Hopper to the Chicago White Sox for catcher Corky Miller, formerly a Red. Hopper was off the 40-man roster, and a longshot to ever be called up to the team, although I'd rather have him than Willy Taveras. Miller was acquired for AAA depth, with Wilkin Castillo now out for the season. Miller played briefly for the Reds in each of the seasons 2001-2004,...

Reds acquire Corky Miller for Norris Hopper Reds acquired from the White Sox C Corky Miller for OF Norris Hopper. Miller will report to Louisville. Does this make room at AAA for Chris Heisey? AAA needed a catcher after Wilkin Castillo went down.

Responding to questions about rumors in the Boston papers about Bronson Arroyo being headed back to the Red Sox, GM Walt Jocketty opined that the Reds were buyers, and in the market for a hitter. Of course, these things are not mutually exclusive, and since starting pitching is an area where the Reds have a surplus, Arroyo or Aaron Harang could be dealt to bring in a hitter. Jocketty also said the...

Joey Votto has been reactivated, with Wilkin Castillo being sent to the DL with a torn labrum that will require surgery. Votto spoke with the press and said his problems with depression went back to his father's death last year, and were exacerbated by his inner ear infection that affected his balance, apparently emotionally as well as physically. We wish him well. Votto is in the lineup tonight, and...

An interesting turn of events: Alex Gonzalez has gone on the disabled list with bone chips in his elbow. The Reds called up Danny Richar, but he had to be put on the 40-man roster to do that, so Edwin Encarnacion was moved to the 60-day DL. Encarnacion, of course, is nearing 60 days on the DL already, and will certainly be out long enough to make that stretch. That does mean that when he is ready to...

I'm still reeling from jch's majestic conquering of the Bardzilla, but the minor league teams played last night anyway. Unfortunately, 3 losses out of 4, and the Bats beat up on the lowly Clippers. All of the Bats position players had a hit as Louisville rocked Columbus 6-1 . Wilkin Castillo was 2-for-4 with a HR and Drew Sutton drove in 2 runs. The pitching was solid, as Ramon Ramirez gave up just...
