Pretty much everybody that gives a crap about baseball understands by now that the Mariners are way different from how they used to be, but people's minds have been changed by different events. Some people were convinced by the hiring of Jack Zduriencik. They knew about him in Milwaukee, they were familiar with his philosophies, and they saw what he meant and what he'd be capable of. Some people were...

An emerging scenario has Getz replacing Callaspo as the starting second baseman, with veteran Willie Bloomquist available if Getz, a left-handed hitter, struggles against left-handed pitchers. Fields would become the starting third baseman, with Alex Gordon shifting to first base and Billy Butler drawing increased duty as the designated hitter. A lefty-righty platoon could develop since Fields has...

Willie Bloomquist frustrates the crap out of fans like me (and if you’re reading this, you’re probably also the type to get frustrated). Willie Bloomquist is not a great baseball player. A lineup of nine Willie Bloomquists will not get your team very far. A defense of eight Willie Bloomquists with a Willie Bloomquist on the [...]

Initially I really liked this deal for the Pirates , who during this season earned the benefit of the doubt in my mind. After learning that Iwamura was only under contract through 2010 however, I was less excited. As often gets said with deals like this, "well, the Pirates will probably trade him later," however, as Royals fans, we know that sometimes that doesn't happen. Looks like Charlie...

Similar to the 2010 Relievers post from several days ago, this is meant to present a snapshot of who remains on the roster, can we jettison some dead weight, and are there any holes to be filled? The particulars about how many batters the team keeps on the 25-man and how many infielders/outfielders/Teahen-Bloomquist-IF/OF hybrids are kept will have a factor in the final roster (please allow some leeway...

Yesterday at Beyond the Box Score I wanted to see if Vladimir Guerrero was able to determine if a pitch was out of the strike zone and the results. The only person I could think of with worse strike zone judgement was Miguel Olivo . I ran the same numbers for Olivo and a few other Royals . For my strike zone, I used -1.2 and 1.2 for the x dimension and 1.5 to 3.5 for the y dimension. For the expanded...

You know how testy we get when people make comments about how awesome our could be in years? Remember the Nageotte/Blackley/Meche/Anderson rotations, Clement/Johjima/Johnson/Moore catching caches and Ichiro/Gutierrez/Saunders/Ackley outfields? We do our best to try and keep people grounded on these types of issues because, as it turns out, the future is incredibly hard to predict and a hell of a lot...

Manager of the Year or no, Jim Tracy is the latest manager to cost his team a shot at a championship because The Closer has to pitch the 9th inning regardless of context. I don't know about you, but when the other team has a guy who hits like Lou Gehrig against righthanders and Willie Bloomquist against lefthanders, I'm not letting him see a righthander with a game on the line unless I have Mariano...

Earlier this season we touched on Dayton Moore's odd proclivity for the playing time bonus . Dating back to the Ross Gload extension, the Royals have included a number of playing time escalators in contracts. Like anything else in a contract, these bonuses can be used in a variety of ways, for the benefit or protection of either party. Three curious things jump out about Dayton's recent use of the...
