by Terence Moore We're in the Jeffersonian spirit of July, fireworks and the founding of our country, but something needs to be said: The playing of our National Anthem before every sporting event has gotten out of control. If nothing else, the practice has gotten old. And get this: There isn't anything in the United States Constitution declaring that we must do such a thing. Neither is it ordered...

Bud Selig probably has a combination of Cerberus and sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads guarding MLB's Central Fund. Still, that hasn't stopped him from giving to someone in need. This time, it's Rangers owner Tom Hicks, whose team has been rumored to have trouble keeping up with payroll. A $15 million cash infusion from the fund should keep the team afloat, at least until a new...

Aroldis Chapman can defect from his home country and become a free agent. Could Stephen Strasburg do something similar? Dave Sheinin of the Washington Post concludes that Scott Boras and his clients ultimately play by the rules Bud Selig makes. Here's a closer look at the super-agent and the system he's working within: Boras wants Strasburg paid like a free agent, even though the Nationals have exclusive...

Originally, this post was to be titled War Criminal: The MLB All-Star Game . I was going to go on a glorious tirade about how I hated what the All-Star game has become. I was going to rant about the stupidity of making it "count." I was going to seethe with rage at the online ballot stuffing and the idiot fans having the right to vote at all. Like the Grinch who had just stolen what little...

To be honest; when the whole Tony George resigning story came out, it was not a shock to me, and I still don't understand everyone out there being shocked. Miller, Martin and Schoettle all reported on this a month ago, and IMS admitted restructuring was coming. Then news of the IRL/Brasil deal that is bringing an influx of cash came out, Ryan Hunter-Reay had to be moved for cash reasons. All of these...

Check out the National League Central standings. Five teams separated by three games in the loss column. Is this a great country or what? Incidentally, big news today from the MLB Network, which has added Ken Rosenthal to its on-air talent. This is a great, great hire because he gives the network what it needs most. It has plenty of experts to explain what happened on the field, but not enough guys...

BOSTON, June 28 (UPI) -- A glittering crowd of about 400 crowded the outfield of Boston's Fenway Park for the wedding reception of Red Sox owner John Henry and Linda Pizzuti. The couple were married in a smaller ceremony aboard a yacht and then hosted friends, family and associates, including Commissioner Bud Selig, for a festive reception Saturday featuring the rock band Maroon 5. The Boston Globe...

Question: Instead of four lap qualifying on non-Indy ovals, why doesn't IndyCar have a three-stage elimination process like we do for the road courses? Run firstly to decide the top 12, then to decide the top 6, then a Firestone Fast 6. Instead of having four laps of each car to fill an hour show on Versus, in each session it's one car for one lap like it used to be. It tests the teams still, it doesn't...

Baseball is thriving, even in these tough economic times. But that doesn't mean it's all prime rib and champagne on every table in Bud Selig's little empire.

I didn't watch all of the Cubs' horrible three-game series at Detroit this week, but what I did see was gruesome enough . The Tigers won all of the games, finishing with a 6-5 victory today in a matinee game that saw the Cubs blow a 3-0 lead . The only thing good about the afternoon was that the Cardinals and Brewers also lost. The Cardinals are in first place and the Brewers are second, one game out....
