For those of you who don't get what the Rangers are doing with the catching situation... Evan Grant agrees... He suggests Adam Melhuse should have gone on the 60 day d.l., because it sends the wrong message to potential 6 year free agents to flat release an injured player, and called up Max Ramirez to back up Gerald Laird, rather than bringing Salty up to split time with him and have a struggling...

Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been called up, and GM Jon Daniels has no plans for him to warm the bench. Salty performed well at AAA Oklahoma, and when backup backstop Adam Melhuse broke a bone in his hand on Thursday, the call-up seemed imminent. However, incumbent Rangers catcher Gerald Laird has also been solid to start the season. Given the organization's desire to get Saltalamacchia regular at-bats...

Richard Durrett with some good news and some bad news... Good news...Salty is up for good, and Adam Melhuse will be let go. Bad news...Brandon McCarthy has had a setback, and won't start throwing until the ASB, at the earliest. Ugh.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia is in D/FW and will be active for tonight's game, per Jon Daniels (via the S-T) . No corresponding move yet to clear a spot on the 25 man for him, but my guess is that Luis Mendoza goes to the d.l., and they wait a day or two to see how Adam Melhuse is. If he's only going to be out a game or two, Salty gets sent back down in a few days to make room for another pitcher, and if...

Adam Melhuse just sent a single up the middle out of the reach of Jon Lester to score David Murphy and tie it at 2, he's at 40 pitches with the count 1-1 to German Duran.

Bases loaded, no outs. And the Rangers don't score any runs after Adam Melhuse, Marlon Byrd and David Murphy strike out in the 11th. The Rangers keep grinding, though. We're still tied in the 12th. Can someone get a clutch hit in extra innings for Texas? Update: The Rangers loaded the bases (thanks to an intentional walk to Byrd) with two outs in the 13th, but David Murphy grounded to first. Michael...

Hank Blalock came out of the game after the last half inning. He flied out to center to end the ninth, but played the bottom half of the inning in the field. His turn at bat didn't come up in the tenth and when the Rangers took the field, Adam Melhuse was at third. Remember, Blalock played with a 104 degree fever the first week of the season. Now, he's out of a game that's tied and maybe about to...

He allows three runs on five hits in the inning. Casey Kotchman hit a two-run homer. The Angels tried to double steal with two outs and Adam Melhuse threw out a runner at third to end the inning. Texas could now use some more runs now that the lead is just one at 4-3. Milton Bradley is up with runners and first and second and two outs in the fourth. Update: He flied out. We're headed to the fifth....

Adam Melhuse and Ben Broussard made starter Dustin Moseley throw strikes and he didn't as both drew walks to load the bases in the second. Ian Kinsler's sacrifice fly to center scored Murphy from third. Michael Young hit a single up the middle to score another run. Kevin Millwood did a nice job of getting out of a jam in the second. His error on a grounder got the inning started, but no damage was...

Evan Grant reports that the final spot on the 40 man roster for the new additions (Dustin Nippert, Adam Melhuse, Jamey Wright, Franklyn German) will be created by putting Brandon McCarthy on the 60 day disabled list. That means McCarthy cannot be activated until May 29, at the earliest. Color me disappointed. I was hopeful that McCarthy would be back by mid-May.

So now that Gerald Laird is starting and Adam Melhuse is backing up, let's talk about catcher. I think this decision makes the most sense. Jarrod Saltalamacchia wants to catch. He's not going to do that often enough playing behind Laird. Saltalamacchia needs to get used to handling a pitching staff on a fulltime basis and to improving defensively. He's good enough to play in the majors. But he wasn't...

Adam Melhuse said he was told this morning that he has made the club. No official word from the Rangers, but that would put Jarrod Saltalamacchia in Triple-A Oklahoma to start the season. Melhuse said he was told when spring training began that he was a long shot to get a job, but knew that circumstances could help him. He said he wasn't surprised, but was excited to get a spot on the roster. The...

T.R. Sullivan reports that Adam Melhuse has made the Rangers roster as the backup catcher, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia is heading for AAA. I think the writing has been on the wall on this for a while now. Sullivan also says the only roster issues unresolved are who the last two relievers will be (although one of those relievers will only be on the roster until April 12). There seems to be a sense that...

The Rangers return to the field today after getting yesterday off -- their only "off" day of the spring. But the competition at catcher continues. The Rangers have some options: • Option A: Make Gerald Laird the starter and veteran Adam Melhuse the backup. Send Jarrod Saltalamacchia to Triple-A Oklahoma and let him play as many days as possible and get some more experience with a pitching staff, calling...
