The Los Angeles Dodgers hadn't won a playoff series in 20 years. The Chicago Cubs all together now hadn't won a World Series since 1908. "It was a series of jinxes," Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier said. "Something had to give."

Will Carroll / Unfiltered : The Myth of Protection — Watching the Dodgers-Cubs game last night, one of the announcers discussed how much better Andre Ethier was hitting since Manny Ramirez came to the team. That's something we can test, so I asked Eric Seidman to take a look at this through the lens of Pitch F/X. His findings follow:

From Will Carroll and Eric Seidman. Andre Ethier recently said that he felt he was seeing better pitches with Manny Ramirez batting behind him….To test this, I looked at the Pitch F/X data for Ethier from 3/31 to 8/27, when he was not hitting ahead of Manny, and compared it to the data from 8/28 until [...]

The Cubs got spanked again tonight. Or did they spank themselves? Carlos Zambrano came to play. And so did Chad Billingsley. Let’s look at the top of the second inning. Into the 2nd inning, Carlos was throwing strikes and it was a pleasure to watch. Andre Ethier broke up Zambrano’s no hitter... Andre Ethier singles to lead off the inning, then Loney, on a hit and run, hits a ball that deflects off the shortstop's glove. First and third with none out for Matt Kemp....

Will Carroll and Eric Seidman have a free BPro post up about the recent comments that batting in front of Manny has helped Andre Ethier. Of course, a detailed look at Pitchf/x data reveals no such thing. It's worth remembering that JC Bradbury and Doug Drinen found that batting in front of a superstar may, in fact, hurt a batter. Did Andre Ethier up his game after the Dodgers obtained Manny? Sure....

Andre Ethier updates his blog in preparation for the series. There are no descriptions of local Chicago delicacies. There are no photos of specially prepared veggies or beef cooked to order. Neither Sushi or Pizza was on his mind. Preparation was the order of the day. Heck, from the sounds of it, the Dodger plane ride to Chicago felt different according to Andre. You could just sense from the way the...

Sal Baxamusa thinks so : A Dodger lineup consisting of Rafael Furcal, Russell Martin, Manny Ramirez, Andre Ethier, James Loney, Matt Kemp, Casey Blake, Blake Dewitt, and some random pitcher will score something like 5.18 runs per game. That figure is the result of current Marcel projections for each those players, assuming an average-hitting pitcher for two plate appearances, and a league-average...

Granted, a .500 clip in September makes believable the idea of a diet consisting entirely of baseballs. But in reality, the Dodger outfielder does a fair amount of real food grubbing, a pleasure he enjoys blogging about in his "Dining...
