Even after signing Burrell, the Rays remain interested in adding free- agent outfielder Gabe Kapler, who could enter their right-field mix and also play center if B.J. Upton is not fully recovered from shoulder surgery at the start of the season. The Burrell signing, however, stretched the Rays financially, and might restrict them from making further moves . . . If you have been hanging around these parts for a while, you know that the model for this site is to tell you what the Rays have done, what they are doing and try to project what they will do based on what we have learned. Unlike most team blogs, we do not very often tell you what the Tampa Bay Rays should do. However, for the next 12 days we will step away from the standard, and we present to you...

Devil Rays superstars Andy Sonnanstine, B.J. Upton and Scott Kazmir were at historic Tropicana Field to witness history — the inaugural St. Petersburg Bowl — and were interviewed on the ESPN2 broadcast. Unfortunately, ESPN2’s broadcast of the historic game was marred by the totally unprofessional outbursts of play-by-play man Sean McDonough, who called local Red Sox [...]

A major goal of the Tampa Bay Rays after the 2007 season was upgrading the defense, mainly in the infield. The 2B was pretty solid with B.J. Upton the Opening Day starter and used 5 other players to start. At 3B, we were surprised with the range and quickness of the Japanese signing Akinori Iwamura. Then we were surprised and excited again for emergence of the big bat of Carlos Pena, who was pretty...

(So naturally after I link to BA's cover/store it goes down) Yes, that is B.J. Upton. Yes that is Baseball America's Almanac . No, I have not bought that to do whatever you cruel people will suggest that I do to pictures of B.J., and no I do not plan on doing so, but you might be interested. Also worth noting, David Price is on the cover of BP2009 . His face shot is the second from the right. BP2009...

Akinori Iwamura's most beneficial move to the team this year was learning to play 2B. By doing that, the Rays were able to use Longoria at third and keep Aki's contribution. Last year, the Rays 2B were BJ Upton (48 games), Brendan Harris (45), Ty Wiggington (39), Josh Wilson (21), Jorge Velandia (11), Jorge Cantu (1), and Aki (1). This 2B platoon provided a good bat ( .296/.350/.485/.835), but a horrible...

According to MLB.com's Jim Molony, several teams contacted the Rays regarding center fielder B.J. Upton. Molony says a trade is unlikely. Star center fielders are rare, and the Rays don't have any strong needs. Upton is under team control through the 2012 season, I believe. Why would teams want such a lazy player?
