What is more confounding for the Tigers about Saturday's game? Is it that their American League-worst problems with right-handed starters arose again? Or is it that their own right-hander, Jeremy Bonderman, had his latest struggle -- one that caused Bobby Seay to warm up in the first and fourth innings, then relieve Bonderman in the fifth inning?

Bobby Seay, 29, is a left-handed relief pitcher who is in his third season with the Tigers. He signed with the club as a free agent on Nov. 22, 2005, then again on Dec. 22, 2006. This season, Seay has given up three runs over nine innings of work out of the Tigers' bullpen. Recently, he talked with Free Press special writer Jon Machota.

At least the bullpen did well. The supposed achilles heel of the 2008 Tigers pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings on Friday, 3 yesterday and 3 today (Zach Miner and Bobby Seay). Yet, the Tigers only won one of those games (Friday). Today, the biggest culprit was starting pitcher Nate Robertson who gave up a four runs in the fourth inning of today's 5-3 loss. The big blow was a three home run...

... say, and I usually don’t make it a point to defend anybody particular in a situation, but I defend Bobby Seay because for the most part we’ve only been with one lefty. We’ve had to pick our spots. We haven’t had many chances to win games, really use him. And he was a little rusty. That’s not Bobby. Bobby’s been doing a good job. And he’s rusty. He hasn’t pitched in four...

I was all set to be upset with this game. I’m not sure when I really braced myself for firm disappointment… probably either after the third error, or after Bobby Seay let in all of the guys Bondo had left on base. C’mon now, that’s like the bloody RECIPE for Tigers failure these [...]

The Tigers have signed left-hander Aaron Fultz to a contract with AAA Toledo. Fultz, an eight-year big-league veteran, was released this week by Cleveland. Bobby Seay is currently the only left-hander in Detroit's bullpen. So if Fultz can get his act together, there's probably a spot for him on the big league club. PECOTA projects Fultz will have a 3.92 ERA in roughly 45 innings pitched...

Well, except for the first inning, we certainly didn’t see Astros clogging up the bases, no indeedy. Yessiree. Bobby Seay got through his 3 hitters with 10 pitches; Miner through his 3 with just 9, Grilli mowed through 4 hitters with 11 pitches; Bautista needed only 6 pitches for his 3 hitters and Todd Jones [...]

Jim Leyland said today that all but one or two bullpen spots are set. He indicated that Todd Jones, Tim Byrdak, Bobby Seay, Jason Grilli and Zach Miner are all locks to make the opening day bullpen. Fernando Rodney would also head north if healthy but it is likely that he will begin the season on the disabled list with shoulder tendinitis. There are no big surprises here. There was some...

He's a longshot, but Leyland mentioned him after the game as being among the candidates for that last spot or two in the bullpen. Given that, here's what we have: Todd Jones, Bobby Seay, Tim Byrdak, Jason Grilli and Zach...

The long list had been whittled to two by the time John Westhoff arrived at Comerica Park on Friday morning. The Tigers traded one of their arbitration-eligible players in November, non-tendered another in December and already signed the rest, except third baseman Miguel Cabrera and left-handed reliever Bobby Seay.

Once again, the Tigers avoided going to the arbitration table as they signed their arbitration eligible players. The big signing was a one year (yes, I the bet with myself when I said they'd sign a five year deal) contract for third baseman Miguel Cabrera. The Tigers will pay him $11.3 million. They must have [...]

No need for arbitration between the Detroit Tigers and outfielder Marcus Thames , as the two sides agreed on a one-year contract today for $1.25 million. That leaves Miguel Cabrera and Bobby Seay as the two remaining Tigers eligible for arbitration. Last year, Thames hit .242/.278/.498 with 18 home runs and 54 RBI. He mostly bounced between left field and first base, but could never quite...

The Tigers' northbound bus during the caravan included several players who spent their winters in warmer climes, which prompted plenty of weather-related discussion along the ride. "We were questioning what the sun actually looks like," quipped reliever Bobby Seay, a Gulfport, Fla., resident. "We haven't seen it in a couple days."
