Maybe the Indians claimed Bryan Bullington on waivers in part because they saw their own 2002 top pick, Jeremy Guthrie , flop badly while putting up stats not dissimilar to Bullington's , then succeed with the Orioles after he was placed on waivers.

Starting pitcher Bryan Bullington, the No. 1 pick in the June 2002 draft out of Ball State, was claimed on waivers Thursday by the Cleveland Indians after the Pittsburgh Pirates removed him from their 40-man roster. The Pirates had planned to reassign Bullington, 27, to Triple-A Indianapolis if he cleared waivers. He was 4-6 with a 5.

The Pirates have promoted pitcher Luis Munoz and sent John Van Benschoten back to Indianapolis. Munoz had actually was demoted from Indianapolis to Altoona in June and hasn't pitched well at either level, so there's no particular reason to think things will get better in the big leagues. He's a starting pitcher, at least in the minors, but does anyone think he'll average more than three innings in...
