On this date eight years ago, Juan Gonzalez signed a one-year deal for $10MM with the Indians. The contract is significant because Gonzalez had turned down an eight-year, $143MM deal from the Tigers less than a year earlier. Four years later on this same date, Carlos Beltran would not turn down a seven-year, $119MM offer from the Mets, becoming the tenth $100MM player in Major League history. With...
J.J. Putz will pitch for Team USA in this year’s World Baseball Classic, according to a ‘potential’ roster released Friday, reports MLB.com. David Wright, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Pedro Feliciano, Jose Reyes, Johan Santana and Francisco Rodriguez will also play in the WBC, according to previous reports. …from what i can gather, players will leave camp for [...]
Jeffrey W asks, “What do you think the lineup is going to look like?” Hmmm, right now, I’ll go with Jose Reyes, followed by Daniel Murphy, David Wright, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Ryan Church, Brian Schneider and Luis Castillo – in other words, not much change from last season. However, I would not be surprised to see [...]
I love this guy. He is one of the very best players in the game when he can play. Similar to Carlos Beltran. Or Mark Teixiera. Except that he can't keep himself in the lineup. The CHONE projection thinks he'll find Wrigley to his liking. If Bradley were able to play 150 games a year, he'd be a 20 million dollar per year player. He's got power, a very high on-base average, and has always been a good...
I understand the concept of negotiation and trying to get the player you want at a reasonable price but if you play hard ball you run the risk of losing that player. Omar has done a tremendous job in certain negotiation; Johan Santana, Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran. But he has also miss-read the market badly at times over paying badly for Luis Castillo and completing missing out on the relief market....
Okay, for more clarity the Marlins signed Mike Wood to a minor league contract. Wood returns from a stint in Japan that went about as well as his domestic big league career, which is highlighted by a 5.49 ERA. Part of the Royals’ 2004 trade bounty for Carlos Beltran, the 29-year-old Wood went 3-12, 4.69 in 26 starts for Yokohama last season. I remember Mike Wood when he was with the Texas Rangers....
David Wright has agreed to play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, according to the New York Post and Daily News. So far, only Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado have announced that they will participate in the WBC, while Johan Santana, Francisco Rodriguez, Duaner Sanchez and Jose Reyes have all expressed interest, based on previous reports. I [...]
LAS VEGAS The Mets have become expert at playing rope-a-dope when it comes to obtaining big names. They have learned to like the underdog role. They were supposed to have no chance at Carlos Beltran, then, boom!, he came to them in January. Same...
The Mets suddenly have a crowded outfield that still has wholes. They have a gold glove, canon armed, speedster and middle of the line-up, switch hitting, All star center fielder in Carlos Beltran. A solid hitting lefty with center fielders range and the best arm on the team in right field with Ryan Church. Then the Mets have two fourth outfielders in Angel Pagan and newly acquired Jeremy Reed. Neither...
Many believe that the biggest event of 2006 was Julio Franco urging Carlos Beltran to accept a curtain call at Shea stadium. At the time Beltran was frustrated with Mets fans after 2005 when they had un-real expectations after he signed a huge contract to play center field. Not only did the episode allow Beltran and the fans to embrace each other but it established the leadership of the club. By the...
Now that the incentives and disincentives for signing free agents are all clear (inasmuch as they can be at this point), imagine a top-five that looks like this: Jose ReyesAdam Dunn David Wright Carlos Beltran Carlos Delgado You've got something like 150 homeruns, 400 walks, 500 runs scored (500 strikeouts). Would you rearrange this order? Would you slot someone else in instead of Dunn? Are you too...
Things I am thankful for on this, my favorite holiday of the year: Carlos Beltran David Wright Jose Reyes Johan Santana Moving to a brand-spanking-new stadium in 2009 (that hopefully won't be called Taxpayer Field) Luis Castillo's balky knees Moises Alou's pee hands Eddie Kunz's ruff outings Daniel Murphy's Irish hammer Jerry Manuel's post-game interviews Carlos Delgado's resurgence Endy's Chavez's...
Ken Davidoff at Newsday posts his second annual “overrated and over-hated 2008″ list which includes Willie Randolph (overrated) and Carlos Beltran (over-hated). At Amazin’ Avenue, the saber-minded Eric Simon lists Mets VORP leaders through the years. For more on VORP, go here. …this kind of thing must take forever to do… The Virginian-Pilot has a video of David [...]
2008 NL Most Valuable Player (BBWAA) Pujols wins, but by far less than he should have. David Wright comes in seventh with 115 points; Carlos Delgado finishes ninth with 96 points; Johan Santana is 11th with 30 points (including a second-place vote); Carlos Beltran finishes 19th with 10 points; Jose Reyes picks up an eighth-place vote. At least everyone who received votes was actually eligible for...
The grass has been installed at Citi Field, according to these recent photos at WCBS, taken by Tom Kaminski in Chopper 880. …that is a weird-looking outfield wall pattern, especially in left-center field, where it actually cuts in and then goes back out… …someone better get Carlos Beltran and Ryan Church a GPS system, so they do not bang [...]
