Phil Rogers / Chicago Tribune : Whispers: Helms pays off for Marlins — The Marlins, who have 17 players eligible for salary arbitration, have signed only two to multiyear contracts since getting Carlos Delgado as a free agent almost four years ago: Hanley Ramirez and Wes Helms, who agreed to a two-year contract rather than become a free agent.

…Extending Omar was a questionable decision. …Resigning Jerry Manuel was a good decision, with a few gray areas to ponder over the next few years. …Picking up Carlos Delgado’s option was a heartfelt thank you for outstanding work, but also a borderline baseball move for a team desperate for long term stability. However, in this young offseason, only [...]

Some sources have reported that the Mets picked up their option on Carlos Delgado. However, the generally reliable Associated Press is not among those sources, and there has been no official word from the Mets. What we have is this quote from Brand Manager Omar Minaya: “I’ve spoken with his agent and just let him know [...]

Barring a trade, it appears Carlos Delgado will remain the Mets' first baseman. General manager Omar Minaya said yesterday the team almost certainly will exercise its option on Delgado. "I've spoken with his agent and just let him know that we...

The Mets announced Omar Minaya's contract extension yesterday, as expected. Then Minaya said he intends to pick up the option year on Carlos Delgado's contract, too. Which makes it only natural to ask what's taking the Mets so long to lock up the one guy who had an even better second half than Delgado, interim manager Jerry Manuel.

It would have been really hard to not bring back Carlos Delgado, he carried this team for most of the second half of the season and where would they find a player who could produce the numbers he compiled. Players who can hit .275 with 100 RBIs and 35 HRs don't grow on trees and without his resurgence this would have been a third place team. If the Mets thought that the core of players needed to be...

As of today, October 2nd, 2008, the Mets are already in full swing with their offseason maneuvers. Omar Minaya received a healthy extension, and it looks likely that the team will take Carlos Delgado for one more year, as well. However, Mets’ interim manager Jerry “American Gangsta” Manuel has yet to accept a contract extension offered [...]

The Mets made Omar Minaya's extension official today. It runs through 2012 with club options for two years beyond that. Matthew Cerrone at MetsBlog likes the decision, but feels the term is excessive. Additionally, Minaya announced that the Mets will exercise Carlos Delgado's $12MM option for '09. This seemed like an easy decision given the $4MM buyout. The Mets were not going to find an .800 OPS first...

After another late-season collapse, we would think the Mets would be hell-bent on fortifying the bullpen, figuring out what to do with the second base issue, deciding on who to bring back and/or acquire for the starting rotation, whether they’ll pick up the option on Carlos Delgado, and who the 2009 left fielder might be. And [...]

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, in an interview with WFAN yesterday: The Mets will pick up Carlos Delgado’s option. They will not trade David Wright or Jose Reyes. The Mets are thinking about Manny Ramirez, who will want a three–or four-year deal. They think they need to go out and get a catcher. Later, the show’s host, Mike Francesa, said [...]

I am listening to Evan Roberts and Joe Benigno and they had some good thoughts about the new York Mets. They made some very good suggestions on to what Omar should do to break up the core of this team. They said that the Mets should not bring back Carlos Delgado and replace him with Daniel Murphy. They said they should also get a big time second basemen like Orlando Hudson, who I think will be perfect....
