Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched into the eighth inning before leaving after having thrown 108 pitches, and then watched Hideki Okajima escape a bases-loaded jam and keep the game scoreless. The inning began with a flyout by Chris Gomez, but Alexi Casilla singled to extend his 14-game hitting streak and Joe Mauer followed with another single, ending Matsuzaka's night at 7 1/3 innings. He allowed six hits...

Dave Bush vs. Tom Gorzelanny , 7:05 PM. Here's the box. Doug Mientkiewicz and his .676 OPS bat second. Raul Chavez and Chris Gomez both start. Freddy Sanchez leads off. Maybe there was something in John Russell 's horoscope about names that end with Z.

Here's the bench so far. I assume, for the purposes of my argument here, that Ryan Doumit and Chris Gomez are de facto starters at catcher and shortstop, respectively. Feel free to take issue with that assumption in the comments if you'd like to propose some other alignment. Gomez has been the best hitter of the three-headed shortstop monster, and his defense at short, while bad, hasn't been worse...

Odalis Perez throws a full-count change slowly by Pittsburgh Pirates' center fielder Nate McLouth, and gets a fly ball outs from Freddy Sanchez and Jason Bay to complete his first scoreless frame. Nationals' leadoff hitter Felipe Lopez beats shortstop Chris Gomez up the middle with a single, but Cristian Guzman grounds into a force at second. Ryan Zimmerman hustles to beat out the throw, avoiding...

That seems to the be the message in Pittsburgh. Apparently the Pirates have decided that, on the heels of their 15th consecutive season with 86 or more losses (thank goodness for the ‘94 players’ strike!), they're pretty much where they want to be. Lessee, the Bucs went out and signed Chris Gomez. That should be enough [...]
