The Baltimore Orioles have used eight relievers this season and Greg Aquino is the only one to allow a run. The other seven have combined for 21 scoreless innings. Not bad for a group that began its season missing closer Chris Ray and potential replacement Danys Baez, probably for the season, because of injuries.

Takashi Saito has a very unique fastball. When batters swing at an average fastball, they miss 13% of the time, but with Saito's fastball, they miss 42% of the time. Only Chris Ray and Chris Schroder generated a higher percentage of swings-and-misses with their fastballs, although they threw their fastball much less than Saito did. This week I'm going to look at pitches that move similarly, and see...

The Orioles have much work to do, if they fancy themselves playoff contenders next year. They need to fill a power void in their lineup with one or two home run hitters. They must shore up an inconsistent bullpen that has no closer, with Chris Ray on the shelf until 2009. They might need to send Daniel Cabrera to a hypnotist to help him find some semblance of control to match his scary stuff.

Closer's elbow needed more extensive surgery The Orioles knew closer Chris Ray probably would be out for the season, but they expected to have him back next year. However, that changed Thursday when what started as a procedure to remove a bone spur from Ray's right elbow revealed the need for more extensive ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction surgery.

When the news broke yesterday that young Orioles closer Chris Ray , one of the cornerstones of the club's supposedly brighter future, is probably lost for the 2008 season after undergoing radical elbow surgery, the strangest thing popped into my mind.
