TB 7, BOS 6: Way to blow it

With a 4-1 lead headed into the bottom of the seventh inning the slumping Red Sox let up six runs en route to their third consecutive loss against Tampa and their sixth loss at the Trop (0-6). Manny Delcarmen and Craig Hansen both allowed six runs in the seventh inning. Goat of the Game: So, hitting and [...]

Bullpen trouble

It wasn't Hideki Okajima this time, but the bullpen built some trouble nonetheless. Between Manny Delcarmen and Craig Hansen, neither reliever retired a single batter in the seventh inning, before David Aardsma finally got a groundout from Cliff Floyd. Jason Bartlett doubled, Akinori Iwamura singled (infield, RBI), and Carl Crawford singled, at which point Delcarmen was taken out. But Hansen did no...

No relief

Though David Aardsma has been outstanding of late -- eight of his last nine outs have been via strikeout -- he couldn't get through a second inning tonight. He got a 1-2-3 sixth, with two Ks, but gave up a walk and a single to start the seventh. So with men on first and third, Craig Hansen came in to pitch. He promptly gave up a single to Lance Berkman, then threw a pitch to Jason Varitek that was...

All for Daisuke

And that was it for Daisuke Matsuzaka. Craig Hansen just came in to reliever Matsuzaka, who had thrown 87 pitches over his five innings in the game. He allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out four batters. He did not allow a run.

More Reasons to Love Papelbon

Watch this interview with Papelbon , where he answers reader questions sent in to Comcast Sports Net. Enjoy the Pirate names and the fact that Craig Hansen's pirate name is too filthy to be mentionable on a family show. Laugh and disuade yourself of any fear that a.) this team has lost the loose edge they had in 2004 and b.) our closer is getting any less crazy as time goes on. I expect him to start...

Hansen leaves bases loaded

Craig Hansen struck out Ryan Ludwick with the bases loaded in relief of Hideki Okajima in the 11th. It's still 3-3. Hansen threw a nasty slider that Ludwick swung through.

Delcarmen pitches out of jam

PHILADELPHIA - Not that it's really hard to do, but Manny Delcarmen struck out Ryan Howard with two on in a 7-4 game in the 7th. Craig Hansen didn't retire any of the three batters he faced and allowed two runs on two hits with a wild pitch. Former Sox reliever J.C, Romero has come on to pitch the 8th for the Phils as the Sox hold on to a three-run lead.

Offense bails out bullpen

After Edwin Encarnacion homered to tie the game at 4-4 Kevin Youkilis and Coco Crisp followed with back-to-back homers to push the Sox past the Reds 6-4. Jonathan Papelbon blew his third save of the season but improved to 3-2 overall after Craig Hansen delivered in relief with a one inning, one strikeout, and one walk [...]

Hansen's journey finally ends safely

CINCINNATI - There have been so many times and so many situations when you thought Craig Hansen just wasn't going to make it.

Enter Aardsma

Hey, the eyes are starting to fade a little. That was David Aardsma, not Craig Hansen, warming in the pen, and Aardsma is in the game. Aardsma hasn't pitched since June 6, when he was knocked around by Seattle for a couple of runs. That was the first time he'd been scored upon since May 22.

Sox bust it open with 5-spot in 8th

Mike Lowell and Kevin Youkilis had 2-run doubles and J.D. Drew singled home another run as the Sox laid out the Mariners with five in the eighth. Craig Hansen worked a scoreless eighth, and Jonathan Papelbon is getting some work with the score 11-2, Sox, entering the ninth.

Sox back in first

The Red Sox are back in first place after a 5-1 win over Tampa Bay. Craig Hansen pitched the ninth for Boston to complete three strong innings by the Sox bullpen in relief of Josh Beckett who pitched the first six.

Crawford in

Strike that. With Craig Hansen coming on, Carl Crawford came on to pinch hit. Crawford didn't start the game because of soreness in his right knee. Just before Hansen got to pitch to Crawford, a fan came out of the right field stands, wearing a Celtics jersey. He made it all the way across the field, evading a couple of security guards, before jumping into the box seats on the left field line. That...

Hansen in

Javier Lopez couldn't get anyone out, walking Evan Longoria and giving up a single to pinch hitter Willy Aybar. So manager Terry Francona replaced him with reliever Craig Hansen with the tying run at the plate in the form of pinch hitter Jonny Gomes (for Eric Hinske).

Hansen in for Sox

OAKLAND, Calif. - Jon Lester is done after five innings. Craig Hansen has come on. Lester settled down nicely after allowing a two-run single to Jack Hannahan in the fourth. He retired the last six batters he faced. Lester's line: 5 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 3 K. Lester faced 25 batters and threw 94 pitches. He left trailing, 4-3.
