Escape from the fifth

Daisuke Matsuzaka might have thrown 31 pitches in the bottom of the fifth inning, giving up two walks and a single, but he did manage to leave the bases loaded. That leaves the score at 3-0, with new pitcher Chris Sampson coming in for Runelvys Hernandez, who was pinch hit for (Darin Erstad) in the last half inning.

Braves @ Angels Open Thread: Maybe Friday the 13th will be lucky for the Braves

I guess worse stuff "could" happen to the team, and really, that wouldn't be surprising at this point. In Angels-related news, I really wish Darin Erstad was still on the Angles. If he was I would be calling for him to be beaned in the head every single at-bat. I know, I know, that's pretty damn harsh, but I really don't like that guy. Here's a little picture to get your blood pumping: Not a dirty...

Ed Wade calls a team meeting. Blum, Erstad to play more.

Geoff Blum will get more playing time at third. Likewise, Darin Erstad in center. Those were the substantive developments on a day that began with GM Ed Wade calling a team meeting to address the team's play. First things first. Blum started in place of Ty Wigginton, and Cecil Cooper indicated it wouldn't be a one-time deal. Michael Bourn got another start in center, but Cooper said fans would be...

The Astros got five shutout innings from Brian Moehler on Friday and seven more from Chris Sampson on Saturday. Let's just say Cecil Cooper is a fast learner.

Give Cecil Cooper credit for trying something new. He went to Doug Brocail instead of Jose Valverde in the ninth and got Carlos Lee off the field in favor of Darin Erstad. It worked out for a 2-1 victory. Cooper has a convenient excuse for using Brocail since Valverde had thrown so many pitches the night before. If he has a game to close Thursday, he'll probably go back to Valverde. But the dynamics...
