Some have whispered it, many have thought it, but finally someone has come out and said it: Asked live on Sky News a few moments ago what would happen IF the Government's Economic Rescue Package doesn't work, Professor David Smith, who chairs the self-styled "Shadow Monetary Policy Committee" of economists, came out with the immortal line "Then we're all doomed!" The spirit of Private Frazer lives...
Filed under: Falcons Every Play Counts is Michael David Smith's weekly look at one specific player or one aspect of a team on every single play of the previous game. I don't know if the Atlanta Falcons are actually a good football team, but I do know they're better than anyone expected. Before the season fans were talking about the Falcons like they'd be lucky to win three games all season. As it...
guardian.co.uk - October 5 2008, by David Smith Programmers try to fool human interrogators Can machines think? That was the question posed by the great mathematician Alan Turing. Half a century later six computers are about to converse with human interrogators in an experiment that will attempt to prove that the answer is yes. In the Turing test a machine seeks to fool judges into believing that it...
Just days after the US Government approved a $25bn loan to the US car industry, the head of Land Rover and Jaguar has called for similar support from the UK Government. Speaking at the Paris Motor Show, David Smith, managing director of Land Rover and Jaguar, stated the UK is on the brink of a severe [...]
I like to combine David Smith's Base Runs and David Gassko's Pitching Runs Created into one single list of "run creation/prevention" leaders for the year. It gives you a pretty good idea of each player's impact on offense and defense, leaving only fielding out of the equation. Here's the final list for 2008. As you can see, the top four players are starting pitchers:
TARP, Baby! Veteran Fannie Mae critic David Smith builds on Andy Kessler to explain why Paulson's "troubled-asset" purchase plan may make sense. The taxpayers could even make so much money that the governement could fund ... national health care! (Take that, Jim Lehrer.) ... As usual, Smith's post is exceptionally easy to follow for those (like me) who don't understand fancy financials. ... It's a...

Filed under: Saints Every Play Counts is Michael David Smith's weekly look at one specific player or one aspect of a team on every single play of the previous game. Remember when Reggie Bush was one of the most exciting football players any of us had ever seen at USC, and everyone said the Saints got a steal when they made him the second pick in the draft? What happened to that Reggie Bush? He certainly...
Filed under: Colts , NFL Injuries Posted 2008-09-26T08:58:00+00:00 by Michael David Smith ( author feed ) When he's healthy, Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders is, in my opinion, the best defensive player in the NFL. But he's healthy so rarely that he has played just 41 of the Colts' 67 games in his five-year career, and he'll miss even more with an ankle injury and arthroscopic knee surgery. So...
Filed under: NFL Video Posted 2008-09-26T09:29:00+00:00 by Michael David Smith ( author feed ) Early this month we showed you Toronto Argonauts wide receiver Arland Bruce III, who scored a touchdown against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and he then proceeded to put on a Spider-Man mask for his post-touchdown celebration. Now we've got a celebration that tops that one for its stupidity: That was Terrence...
Two news items today, and readers should feel free to comment. Michael David Smith of FanHouse writes: “My fellow Lions fans, our long local nightmare is over. Detroit Lions President, General Manager and all-around incompetent executive Matt Millen is no longer running the team into the ground, Jay Glazer reports.” Smith, who grew up as a Lions fan and who has been advocating (pleading?) for
Filed under: Dolphins Every Play Counts is Michael David Smith's weekly look at one specific player or one aspect of a team on every single play of the previous game. Everyone already knows that Miami running back Ronnie Brown ran for four touchdowns and threw for another as the Dolphins dominated the New England Patriots. But not enough attention has been paid to the role that rookie offensive tackle...
