The Manny Ramirez sycophants are still chirping, but whether they like it or not, the Jason Bay era has begun. Bay arrived in Boston and although, he didn’t get the police escort that Doug Mirabelli got when he returned back to Boston; he did receive a hero’s welcome. Not bad for a guy who’s been playing for a team that no one cares about. Last night, Bay and the Sox beat the Oakland A’s 2-1 . A little...

OAKLAND - The Red Sox traded Justin Duchscherer to the Texas Rangers back on June 12, 2001 for Doug Mirabelli. Tonight the former Sox farmhand has retired 12 straight batters. Duchscherer is 1-0 with a 2.66 ERA vs. Boston as a reliever (six earned runs in 20-1/3 innings). He's very effective at Fenway where he owns a 1.10 ERA (two earned runs in 16-1/3 innings) over 10 appearances.

The last time the Red Sox tried someone other than Doug Mirabelli behind the plate with knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, general manager Theo Epstein was panicked into what he now rues as his worst trade. Epstein gave up on catcher Josh Bard - who had committed 10 passed balls in five starts with Wakefield, including four in one game - and ...

“He’ll be the first to admit he wasn't a challenger for the batting title, or a gold glover,” wrote Curt Schilling of suddenly released Boston backstop Doug Mirabelli, “but he had a specific job and he was pretty damn good at it.” That specific job, aside from being misquoted about bloody socks, was [...]

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Tim Wakefield addressed the parting of his dear friend, Doug Mirabelli with the media today for the first time. Wakefield described his reaction to Mirabelli's released as "shocked. Very shocked." "I don't know what else to say about it. I was on the field and someone came and told me that Dougie has been released. I'm sadddened by the whole situation, but it's a business decision...

The Boston Red Sox have released backup catcher Doug Mirabelli. The 37-year-old backstop has amassed 89 hits against 148 strikeouts over the past three seasons and possesses exactly one usable baseball skill — the ability to catch Tim Wakefield's knuckleball. That may not sound like much, but it was enough to give Mirabelli a career. Hey, [...]

It appears that the Tigers aren't looking at Doug Mirabelli as the solution to their back-up catcher opening, which should relieve most fans, based on what I've been reading around the Tigersphere. "Probably not at this point," said Dave Dombrowski, the Tigers president and general manager. Yet it's still not clear which in-house candidate might best fill that role for Detroit. Jim Leyland officially...

The first sign that the Doug Mirabelli era was officially over? When I walked into the clubhouse around 8 this morning, Manny Ramirez had moved into Dougie's old digs. Give Manny credit for this. He knows about prime real estate....

He's got great eyes . . . and understanding from the bench. Great awareness of what guys are going through, hitting-wise and catching-wise, a great sounding board. He always knows what's going on, and that is such a...

We'll never forget how Doug Mirabelli went from "the other guy" to Tim Wakefield's personal catcher. We'll never forget when he got traded, traded back, and changed into his catcher's gear while receiving a police escort today. Or the time Doug was incorrectly implicated as a fink in the mild Schilling sock controversy . We'll never forget the crack we made that, someday, Mirabelli and Wake will be...

Not long after speaking with Jason Varitek yesterday, Doug Mirabelli, the captain's catching partner in crime since 2001, was given his unconditional release. It was further proof how difficult the job is - never knowing when the end is near and hoping your body doesn't betray you before you're ready to hang up your spikes.
