I recently purchased this book and just started to look at it. Lucas made some prophetic remarks. He mentioned that the West should respond to Russia in the same manner as if it fired a missile at England when it bombs Georgia. This book was released earlier this year. Interesting that he expected...

Edward Lucas concludes his op-ed in The Times on the Ossetian dilemma with this: The fighting should be a deafening wake-up call to the West. Our fatal mistake was made at the Nato summit in Bucharest in April, when Georgia's attempt to get a clear path to membership of the alliance was rebuffed. Mr Saakashvili warned us then that Russia would take advantage of any display of Western weakness or indecision....

From The Times August 9, 2008 How Georgia fell into its enemies' trap The fighting in the Caucasus should be a deafening wake-up call to the West Edward Lucas When is a victory not a victory? When it dents your country's image, scares your allies and gets you into an unwinnable war with a hugely stronger opponent. That is the bleak outlook for Georgia this weekend, after what initially looked like...

Russian T-90 tanks advancing on Tskhinvali in South Ossetia. This is going to go down in history as one of those miscalculations that led straight to disaster. Here’s the story in brief, based on a well-written article in The Telegraph and a column by Edward Lucas in The Times: Following the dissolution of the Soviet [...]

Edward Lucas in The Telegraph , his article entitled "Russia sees us as pawns on its chessboard" is well written, nicely analytical and very very worrying. "Russian thinking is still rooted in a Soviet approach that leaves little room for the concept of mutual benefit. The "zero-sum" game is deeply entrenched: if something is good for the West, it is bad for Russia, and vice versa. That chimes neatly...

Russia sees us as pawns on its chessboard By Edward Lucas So now we know: the "new Russia" of Dmitri Medvedev looks very like the old one of Vladimir Putin. Consider the events of the past week. MI5 accused its Russian counterpart of murder; in return, Russian media "unmasked" a senior UK diplomat as a spy. Britain's largest company, BP, came closer to losing its flagship investment in Russia. The...

Murder, caviar and why our relations with a thuggish Kremlin are at their worst since the Cold War By Edward Lucas Gordon Brown's personal relationships with foreign leaders are not his strong suit. He is regularly out-dazzled by Nicolas Sarkozy and outmanoeuvred by George Bush. But in his meeting with Russia's new president, Dmitry Medvedev, this week, he showed commendable - and rare - resolve in...

One more review, by Edward Lucas, of the book on Soviet-time jokes - and one more joke from the book: “Who built the White Sea canal [Stalin’s single most murderous slave-labour project]?” “The left bank was built by those who told the jokes, and the right bank by those who listened.”

The Economist 's Edward Lucas has an interesting piece up about Latvia, dubbed "The Latvian Puzzle." Puzzling is the appropriate word. I have no idea what to write about Latvia. Its politics are dominated by parties with names that don't seem to mean anything. I mean, who isn't in favor of a new era ? Who doesn't wish for a country governed from the harmony center ? And a union of greens and farmers...
