ESPN's Jerry Crasnick is reporting that the Pirates have reached an agreement on a three-year extension for Ryan Doumit, buying out his arbitration years. Doumit, 27, hit .318/.357/.501 in 465 plate appearances in 2008. His .858 OPS ranks him alongside catchers such as Joe Mauer and Geovany Soto. Not bad company there. The terms of the deal haven't been released yet, but Crasnick says there is a club...

The 2008 Rookie of the Year awards were handed out recently and the winners came as no surprise. Evan Longoria , of the Tampa Bay Rays, was the unanimous choice in the American League, while Geovany Soto , of the Chicago Cubs, received all but one first-place vote in the National League. In reality, there was not a ton of competition for the awards - both winners stood out head-and-shoulders above...

As expected, Geovany Soto was voted the NL's Rookie of the Year, nearly unanimously. I should be surprised that a BBWAA voter gave Joey Votto a first place vote over Soto, but then, this is the same group that gave fourth place to a non-rookie.

2008 NL ROY Geovany Soto (Cubbie Nation/File) Filed:November 12th, 2008 Fortunately, all surprises aren't this bad. In the least surprising move of the 2008 season, Geovany Soto has been named the 2008 NL Rookie of the Year. I mean, when you're playing the most demanding position on the field, and doing it for a division winner, it pretty much breaks about every possible tie. For everyone keeping...

Late night bits, indeed (it’s 2 AM out here). 1. First, congratulations to Evan Longoria (AL) and Geovany Soto (NL) as both players earned their ROTY honors for 2008. In a few years, Alex Rodriguez’s prowess at the hot corner will be eclipsed by Evan Longoria, who’s freakish power and defensive ability will keep him in [...]
