Interesting blurb from the Post-Gazette: Management heads into the spring with the stance that only [Paul] Maholm has a job in the rotation. But be sure that Ian Snell, Ross Ohlendorf and Duke have a leg up. That would leave one spot for Tom Gorzelanny, Jeff Karstens or Phil Dumatrait . But that is for now. Much could change with spring performance and health. I'm trying to identify a pattern in the...

The Pirates have approached Nate McLouth, Paul Maholm and Ryan Doumit about extensions, the Post-Gazette reports. The Bucs signed three players in similar situations ( Matt Capps, Freddy Sanchez and Ian Snell ) to extensions last Spring, and two of those players were a complete mess in 2008. But the terms of these kinds of contracts for pre-arbitration players are so favorable that the Pirates really...

John Perrotto started the Braves-Pirates rumors early this afternoon : l [hear] Atlanta has interest in a couple of Pirates starting pitchers, left-hander Paul Maholm and right-hander Ian Snell, but won’t give up top pitching prospect Tommy Hanson in a trade. D-Fab is also hearing some Braves-Pirates whispers: Hearing that the Braves have asked the Pirates about LH Paul Maholm and CF Nate McLouth....

According to John Perrotto of the Beaver County Times, the Braves are interested in Paul Maholm and Ian Snell but wouldn't be willing to trade Tommy Hanson. It's hard to see the pitching-deprived Pirates trading either starter without getting MLB-ready pitching in return. Perrotto adds that the Nationals also have interest in Snell.

PLAYER POS. COMMUNITY ZiPS ACTUAL Ian Snell SP 200 IP, 173 K, 67 BB, 3.84 ERA 191 IP, 157 K, 62 BB, 4.48 ERA 164 IP, 135 K, 89 BB, 5.42 ERA Azibuck was really idiosyncratic in his projections of just about every player and got a lot of them very, very wrong, but he nailed this one, guessing Snell would have 166 IP, 132 K, 77 BB and a 5.01 ERA. I'll let him explain what he was thinking, but whatever...

Did anyone notice? - Ian Snell pitched pretty well. In fact, he had a no-hitter in the 5th inning. As soon as Greg Brown mentioned "he may have a shot at history" he promptly gave up a homer. Still, a nice last outing. - Freddy Sanchez and Ryan Doumit homered for the Bucs. The final score was 6-3. - Could it be the last raising this year?

Two horrible teams closing out the season against each other does not make for a compelling story. Never have I seen a game in which that cliche was so relevant. - The Astros took a 2-0 lead off Ian Snell after he walked a bunch of guys. He wasn't hit hard, but these last two games have featured lots of free passes issued by Buccos. - Back to the inches theme, though: - Adam LaRoche hit a home run OFF THE TOP OF THE FENCE. Had it been an inch shorter, Bourn catches it. The FSN freeze cam was money...
