Relievers Grant Balfour and J.P. Howell pitched the Rays out of a pair of late-inning jams as Tampa Bay completed a 6-2 AL division series victory over the White Sox. Akinori Iwamura's go-ahead two-run homer was the key hit.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Scott Kazmir yielded five hits in six scoreless innings Saturday and Tampa Bay clinched its first-ever playoff berth with a 7-2 win over Minnesota. Kazmir (12-7) walked one batter and fanned five before relievers Grant Balfour and J.P. Howell finished. Carlos Pena knocked in two runs with a third inning double. One of two hits by DH Cliff Floyd was a seventh...

During last night’s telecast of the Rays/Twins game there was quite a few times where the announcers raised the question, who is the MVP of the Rays? Immediately a few names popped in by head: Jason Bartlett, J.P. Howell and Carlos Pena. As I thought about it a little more I added Evan Longoria, Grant Balfour and Dioner [...]

What was hurting for LHP J.P. Howell a week or so ago? What wasn't?

THE GOOD: Even more important than Carlos Pena's 2-run home run in the top of the 9th with 2 outs that gave the Rays a 3-run cushion, was Akinori Iwamura handling the bad-hop ground ball in the 7th inning. With JP Howell relieving Grant Balfour with 1 on and 2 outs, Howell gave up a single, threw a wild pitch and walked a batter. He then ran the count to 2-2, before getting Esteban German hit a hard...

Scott Kazmir and two relievers combined on a two-hitter in the left-hander's first start since winning the All-Star Game, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the struggling A's 4-0 Monday night. J.P. Howell (39), B.J. Upton, center, and Evan Longoria celebrate the Rays' 4-0 win over the A's.

THE GOOD: Edwin Jackson after the first inning. He seemed to gain a few inches on his fastball and settled down to hold the Yankees scoreless for the next 5+ innings after allowing 1 run in the first... JP Howell was once again his masterful self pitching 2 scoreless innings of relief, striking out 3... THE BAD: The Offense. 1 run, 9 hits in 2 games. 3 walks, 17 strikeouts, in 2 games ...We love that...

BALTIMORE | Outfielder Joey Gathright isn't sure what to expect Friday when he returns to Tampa Bay for the first time since the June 20, 2006 trade brought him to the Royals in exchange for left-handed pitcher J.P. Howell.

That was quite a grouse performance eh? A ripper of a performance by Garza, seven innings, five hits, three strikeouts, and no walks while throwing around 63% strikes. Garza gave way to offsiders J.P. Howell and Grant Balfour, and no knock on Howell but things got interesting when Balfour rocked up. Balfour's mid-to-upper 90's fastball made the Sox hitters look like swagmen as the Rays became tall...

Matt Garza did his teammates proud, with seven innings of five-hit, one run ball. And that one run was unearned. Garza also struck out three batters. He came out for J.P. Howell, who just struck out Jason Varitek on a particularly ugly (pathetic') swing.

Troy Percival came out of the game, after hurting his leg backing up third base on the last play. So with Brandon Moss on third base and Julio Lugo at the plate, J.P. Howell has come in to pitch. It's 5-4, with the Rays still leading. There are two outs in the ninth. Sean Casey was pulled back wtih Howell coming into the game.

The moniker seemed appropriate at the time. J.P. Howell had just done it again last week, pitching a couple of spotless innings in relief of Andy Sonnanstine to maintain a Rays lead before handing it off to the late-inning relievers, when his manager referred to him as a "bridge" in Tampa Bay's bullpen.
