On Friday, July 7, 2006, the Yankees were in Tampa Bay facing the Devil Rays for a weekend series. Jaret Wright, then 4-5, was on the hill against Jae Seo. It was hardly a match-up for the ages. That evening, Wright had his best performance as a Yankee. He threw six four-hit innings while striking out [...]

For the first time in many a season, Yankee fans could look forward to finally having a young, homegrown pitching staff. No more Carl Pavano. No more Jaret Wright. No more Randy Johnson. We could finally take a peek at the Columbus roster of a few years ago, or last season's in Scranton

The Bucs have traded pitching prospect Todd Redmond to the Braves for reliever Tyler Yates , and will buy out Byung-Hyun Kim 's contract. The Bucs also released Juan Perez , allowed Jaret Wright to become a free agent, added Doug Mientkiewicz to the 40-man roster, and sent Jorge Velandia and Josh Wilson to minor league camp. Whew! I wish I had more time to deal with this stuff, but here are a few...

Paul Maholm shut down a Yankees lineup that was missing names like Jeter, Rodriguez and others, and the Pirates won, 8-0. Maholm went six shutout innings, allowing only two hits. He did walk three while only striking out two. Jaret Wright, Sean Burnett and Byung-Hyun Kim each added a perfect inning of [...]

In "The Baseball Prospect Book 2007," John Sickels listed the Yankees' Phil Hughes as the best pitching prospect in all of baseball. In "The Baseball Prospect Book 1997," Sickels listed the Indians' Jaret Wright as the best pitching prospect in all of baseball. Just playing around with the Complete Baseball Encyclopedia , looking for 21-year old pitchers who had the same relative command as Phil Hughes...

Michael Cuddyer went 3-for-3 as the Twins beat the Bucs, 8-4. Matt Morris , Paul Maholm and Jaret Wright were all knocked around. Incidentally, Pirates.com is hilariously trying to spin Maholm's outing : Maholm allowed two runs on three hits in three innings against the Twins. And, really, if it hadn't been for two infield singles, the two-out, two-run double off the bat of Justin Morneau would have...

I missed this yesterday, but this story is interesting: Can someone supplant Duke? The answer would appear to be yes, so long as two things happen: Duke must show little or no sign of improvement from the past two seasons -- meaning too many hits and too few swings and misses -- and newcomer Jaret Wright must show he is healthy and effective. Other candidates could join the mix to challenge Duke, too,...

According to his blog, Phil Hughes will be taking Sean Henn's #34 this season. Let's hope Phil has better luck with it than the last two guys to wear it: Henn and Jaret Wright.

The .Tampa Tribune reports that Casey Fossum has landed with the Pittsburgh Pirates, this just a day after Jaret Wright also joined the Pirates. I officially feel bad for Pirates' fans, they seem like such nice people too.

The Bucs have signed Hector Carrasco, Casey Fossum , and Jaret Wright to minor-league deals. These signings improve the Pirates' lack of pitching depth, but only a little. All three can start, and Carrasco and Wright were useful in the big leagues as recently as 2006. Carrasco was actually downright good in both 2005 and 2006. He's 38 now, so his bad year in 2007 could mean he's done, but maybe not....

The Pirates have picked up the slack, signing Jaret Wright to a minor league deal. Trading for Jaret Wright was one of those things the Orioles always did, a big reason we're terrible to this day. If you'd told me a year ago that Wright would have missed basically all of 2007, then waited until almost February 2008 to sign a minor league deal with Pittsburgh, I'd have said, "Yeah, that makes sense."...
