According to Ian Browne of MLB.com, the Red Sox are still pursuing free agent catcher Jason Varitek. "There's still some unfinished business," Red Sox GM Theo Epstein said Thursday. "Jason is still out there. As I said at the beginning of the offseason, he's been a really important guy here to this organization and by no means have we shut the door on him." Varitek hit .220 with 13 home runs and 43...

Earlier this week Buster Olney noted that baseball’s free agent compensation rules are working against some of the remaining free agents, pointing out that teams are reluctant to forfeit high draft picks for guys that are considered complimentary players. Jason Varitek and The Orlandos - Hudson & Cabrera - immediately come to mind. Another such [...] Post from: River Ave. Blues A New York Yankees blog...

ESPN's Buster Olney looks at several free agents who currently reside in "compensation-pick purgatory": Orlando Cabrera, Juan Cruz, Jason Varitek, and Ben Sheets. The cost to sign one of these four includes the loss of a draft pick, causing many teams to avoid them. You can add Orlando Hudson and perhaps Oliver Perez to Olney's list. Darren Oliver (or his agent) saw this situation coming and chose...

Chad Finn of the Boston Globe recaps Peter Gammons' appearance today on WEEI. Gammons believes the Red Sox would sign Jason Varitek if he offered his services for $2MM. Gammons still believes the Red Sox would prefer to take the draft picks and trade for a different catcher. Gammons says the player's association was "strongly advising" agents to turn down arbitration offers, but that in the end it...

From Buster Olney: Another example: The Florida Marlins have a talented young pitching staff and a need at catcher. On paper, Varitek would fit them perfectly, with the Marlins perhaps even willing to go above and beyond their typical expenditure to sign him. But Florida is a team that must live and breathe on the power [...]

The more I think about it, the more I can’t believe Jason Varitek is going return to the Red Sox this year. It would make sense for him if he were to return. There aren’t other offers out there, and Boras’ mystery teams won’t materialize, not when the Yankees have already inflicted their Sox emotional damage [...]

Daniel Barbarisi / Providence Journal : CATCH-22 … At Jason Varitek's peak, he was a top-five catcher, an offensive force who was just as valuable behind the plate as he was in the locker room. — But offensively, that peak is at least three years gone. The Red Sox would be making a mistake to pay him like the player he once was …

According to Daniel Barbarisi of the Providence Journal, the Boston Red Sox and Jason Varitek could be working on a 2-year deal. Barbarisi also says the Red Sox don’t like to sign aging veterans, something we’ve known for a long time. As we know, Scott Boras is trying to get his client a 4-year deal similar [...]

Tony Massarotti / Boston Globe : More on Bard — In case you're wondering, a source has confirmed an agreement between the Red Sox and catcher Josh Bard, whom the club eyes as a backup, perhaps to Jason Varitek. The Bard acquisition in no way eliminates the chance of Varitek returning to the club in 2009.
