Hairston opens door for Cards

Javier Valentin's two-run, two-out pinch-hit homer in the ninth made the Cardinals work an extra half inning for their 7-6 victory over the Reds. This game was lost, however, in the sixth and eighth when left fielder Jerry Hairston Jr. played three balls sliced into the corner into triples.

MLB: St. Louis 7, Cincinnati 6

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- A sacrifice fly in the ninth inning by Troy Glaus Friday gave the St. Louis Cardinals a 7-6 victory over Cincinnati. The Reds tied it in the top of the ninth on Javier Valentin's two-run homer, but Bill Bray (2-2) gave up a single to Felipe Lopez with one out in the bottom half of the inning. St. Louis eventually loaded the bases before Glaus hit a fly ball to deep center...

Reds tie it, blow it in 9th

The Reds tied the Cardinals on a dramatic, ninth-inning homer by Javier Valentin, only to blow it moments later.

Votto Back

As expected, Joey Votto was reinstated from the bereavement list, and Adam Rosales sent back to Louisville. Rosales never got a start, and was 1-for-5 as a pinch-hitter. Javier Valentin nonetheless got the start at first base tonight.

Reds 3, Pirates 1: Dickerson Runs Fast

Chris Dickerson went 3-4 on the day after being “protected” by his “manager.” (Corey Patterson continued to play and would have screwed the Reds over again with a base-running blunder, had it not been for Dickerson saving his pathetic butt.) Javier Valentín added a solo shot along with the 2 RBI from Dickerson, and that [...]

Still Some Power

Despite losing Griffey and Dunn, the Reds still managed to generate some power against the Pirates tonight. Brandon Phillips and Javier Valentin each homered as the Reds took the game 5-1. Edinson Volquez stopped his slide, allowing one run in...

Volquez pitches Reds to 5-1 victory over Pirates

Edinson Volquez pitched into the seventh inning to snap a post All-Star break slump and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 Tuesday night in their first game since they traded Adam Dunn. Brandon Phillips and Javier Valentin supplied the power...

Padres 5, Reds 9: Javy Pwns Maddux

Javier Valentin continued his total world domination over Greg Maddux yesterday, collecting a home run off him en route to the Reds win of the game and the series. Javy wasn’t the only hero, though. RHM and I were in the Victory Field stands in Indianapolis when I noticed the Reds had scored a bunch of [...]

Reds Take Series From Padres

Cincinnati defeated San Diego 9-5 today in the series finale, with Javier Valentin a hitting hero in his second straight start, and first behind the plate since April 15. Bronson Arroyo made a quality start, allowing three runs in seven innings, all scored on two homers. Jeremy Affeldt gave up an unearned run in the 8th, and Todd Coffey had to be pulled from the 9th after giving up three hits and a...

Mets 10, Reds 8: Meet the Second Half, Same as the First Half

The Reds launched the start of the second half of the year with a loss. So things weren’t really all that different for them. One thing that was new was the team battled back from deficits multiple times. The most exciting was when Javier Valentin pinchhit with the bases loaded. He launched a double into the [...]

Valentin at Third

OK, this is just crazy. We thought Dusty Baker was nutty to put Javier Valentin at 3B for an inning a couple of nights ago. Tonight, Valentin started at third. No, really! Dunn is hitting second again, with Phillips third and Griffey cleanup. Something seems to be working, because the Reds are up 5-0 in the third inning.

The Latin Love Machine Gets to Third

At first when I saw Javier Valentín on the roster for third base, my immediate response was, and I quote, “WTF?” I mean, as glad as I am to see the LLM in the line-up for a change, he seems a little short and stout for the hot corner. But the more I got to think [...]

Quick hook on Okajima

CINCINNATI - After Tim Wakefield went 7 innings, Hideki Okajima started the 8th, but the struggling reliever faced three batters and two reached. On came Manny Delcarmen in this 4-2 game. Delcarmen's first pitch - RBI single right field by pinch-hitter Javier Valentin. It's 4-3 Sox but runners at the corners and one out.

Quick Reds Roundup

A few items worth discussing… –After going 2-3 last night, catcher Javier Valentin strained a hamstring and was taken out of the game. Looks like we may have a catching platoon of Paul Bako and Ryan Hanigan now. –SP Josh Fogg was terrible last night. Hurry up, Homer Bailey. –Dusty Baker says that Jeff Keppinger is [...]
