Lester gets tough

BALTIMORE - Talk about stopper stuff. Jon Lester had Kevin Millar at second after the former Sox first baseman doubled with one out, and Lester stranded im there with tough pitching to Luke Scott (strikeout) and Jay Payton (groundout to third) in the 7th. He has now gone seven more innings in his last eight starts and 11 of his last 12. He leads 2-1 as we enter the 8th.

Huff, Millar, Payton Clear Waivers

According to Dan Connolly and Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, four Orioles players have cleared waivers: Aubrey Huff, Jay Payton, Kevin Millar, and Jamie Walker. Walker we already knew about. The Orioles can now trade any of the four to any team. I had guessed that Huff would not clear waivers, on account of his .910 OPS (10th in the AL). However, the $10.1MM owed to Huff through '09 proved too...

Thanks, A-Hole

Jay Payton robbed Juan Riveria of a home run in Wednesday's 9-4 win over the Orioles. That might have seemed meaningless in the big scheme, except that it robbed Angels fans of free food from Hooters Claim Jumper. And yes, this would be the point were Bain would say that baseball fans don't need any free food. In other news, Brett Favre has been traded to the New York Jets. Thankfully, he was traded...

Deals That Make Sense

The Mets need an outfielder, a reliever, and possibly a starting pitcher, in that order. All agreed? They need to obtain these pieces without flushing the farm system. I have some ideas. Baltimore Orioles: Chad Bradford and one of: Jay Payton, Aubrey Huff, or Kevin Millar. ChadBrad is exactly what the Mets need right now, and [...]

O's add two runs in 8th inning, lead 6-3

The Orioles have built that one-run lead in the eighth inning and now lead 6-3. With two outs, Brian Fahey singled to right field to score Melvin Mora and Jay Payton. Mora reached after bing hit by a pitch and Payton pinch ran for Luke Scott, who was intentionally walked by Manny Delcarmen. Delcarmen gave up one hit in that inning, but gave up two runs with two walks. He had issued runs in just two...

O's Sunday skid continues

Club scores five runs in final two innings but loses for 13th straight Sunday Jay Payton grimaces after striking out to end the fifth inning today against the Texas Rangers. The Orioles hit four home runs on the day and rallied for five runs in the final two innings, but couldn't catch the Rangers, losing 11-10. It was the Orioles' 13th straight Sunday defeat.

Okajima struggles once again

HOUSTON - It had been six weeks since Hideki Okajima was brought into a game in this situation. Six weeks since Okajima entered with a runner on, his overall struggles and inherited runners making for a combustible formula. Back on May 14, it was Jay Payton whose grand slam temporarily ended the experiment with the reliever and men on base.

Trusting his stuff?

With Hideki Okajima coming on in relief of David Aardsma, with Carlos Lee on first base, this marks the first time in 15 appearances that Okajima has been entrusted with an inherited runner. In that game, on May 14, Okajima allowed a grand slam to Jay Payton. And it didn't work out so well for the Red Sox this time either. After a wild pitch put Lee on second base, Mark Loretta (again) singled up...

Tomorrow Is Today in The Outfield

With Luke Scott facing left-handed pitching more often, Jay Payton is beginning to lose at-bats, which is a good problem for the Orioles to have.
