Through two days of the playoffs: Jose Mesa: 1/3 of an inning pitched, 1 H, 2 BB, 3 ER. Bringing Mesa into a game in which he was down 2 runs and attempting to not fall behind 2-0 in the series may be the stupidest thing Charlie Manuel has every done. Think about that statement. Josh Fogg: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 K. His solid relief of Franklin Morales on a scant two days rest after starting Monday's one game...

for minor-league infielder Jesus Merchan. It's an okay, in that Mateo's probably better than Jose Mesa. Like Mesa, he has an ugly incident in his past, and much more recently than Joe Table: in May, Mateo was arrested for spousal abuse. The Mariners demoted him to triple-A afterwards, and he has pitched very well for Tacoma: 32.2 IP, 24 H, 2 BB, 28 K, 0.83 ERA. Merchan, 26, is enjoying a career year...

The thought of discussing Jose Mesa and the rest of the Phillies' bullpen -- on my Saturday -- disgusts me. All that needs to be said has been written in last night's game thread. Tonight, Jamie Moyer and the Phillies will try to get through seven innings with a double-digit lead, just to play it safe. Check out last night's game thread, where observers burned the midnight oil observing Mesa's arsenal...
