WoTYC, 3, John Morgan: An All-Time Worst Team seems appropriate and ripe for comedy. No problem. Worst Mariner team of all time: DH: Jose Vidro C: Kenji Johjima 1B: Richie Sexson 2B: Jose Lopez… Yes it’s your 2008 Seattle Mariners! The worst part about that — it’s not that far off. Say they finish at 100 losses. Their competition will be: – the 1978 [...]

On August 5 the Mariners placed Jose Vidro on outright waivers ( not trade waivers) meaning they had 10 days to trade him or grant his release. After being unsuccessful in trade attempts Seattle has granted him his outright release. The Mariners are now on the hook for his 8.5mil. salary while another team can sign him at league minimum without it costing any prospects. Back when he was placed on waivers...

What is a professional hitter without a job? During this time, Jose Vidro hit .232/.259/.329, dragging his season line to .234/.274/.338 (fun fact: Betancourt was .222/.238/.289 and Johjima .188/.238/.265 over the same period).\ He ends his time here as the worst DH in the league, and one of the worst hitters in all of baseball, and an [...]

OPS is the sum of a player’s on-base percentage (their ability to get on base, whether by hit or walk) and slugging percentage (the total number of bases a player accumulates where a homer equals 4 bases, a triple equals 3, etc. [...]

Jose Vidro was once considered the next Jeff Kent, a power hitting second baseman and for several seasons he put up Kent like numbers but the biggest difference was that he was unable to sustain the pace. For five consecutive years he batted over .300 for the season, drove in 90 RBIs two of those years and over 50 the other three years while hitting double digit homeruns. He was a three time All-Star...

As expected, the Mariners designated struggling DH Jose Vidro for assignment yesterday. They had not been able to unload his contract on anyone. Vidro is hitting just .234/.274/.338 this year in 330 plate appearances. It shouldn't be hard to find a more productive DH.
