I will be writing a longer post about off season plans for next year in about an hour. However, I want to throw out a few questions to get things started this morning. Is this team still, even with the potential losses of Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood and others, the best team by far [...]

Only Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood are meaningful contributors eligible for free agency (sorry Jim Edmonds, Bob Howry, and Henry Blanco.) Given the market (read: insane money) thrown at starters and closers I'm not so sure either will return, although given their special circumstances it's more likely than, say, Francisco Rodriguez returning to the Angels. Wood in particular is probably a 95% guarantee...

No pitcher had ever made a quicker, more incredible first impression than Kerry Wood did in 1998. The Cubs' 20-year old phenom was lifted from the minor leagues carrying enormous expectations. And in just his 5th career start, Wood took on an Astros team that would win 102 games and dominated them for 9 innings. In his complete game, 1 hit, no walk shutout, Kerry Wood struck out a National League...

Jorge Cantu made a good run at the honor but when the votes were tabulated, he finished fourth . Lidge finished with 53 points and was followed by Kerry Wood of the Cubs (34), Ryan Ludwick of the Cardinals (27) and Jorge Cantu of the Marlins (23). Still, fourth isn't too bad. Especially considering that most of the voters couldn't be bothered with watching the Marlins play. Nonetheless, he made a...

The Phillies closer, who converted all 41 of his save opportunities, received 12 first-place votes and was named on 22 of 30 ballets, according to the team Web site. Beerleaguer: This is a goofy category. Who qualifies exactly? Cubs closer Kerry Wood finished second, followed by Cardinals outfielder Ryan Ludwick, Marlins third baseman Jorge Cantu and Mets outfielder Fernando Tatis. Where exactly did...

Fernando Tatis finished fifth in the voting behind Jorge Cantu, Ryan Ludwick, Kerry Wood, and winner Brad Lidge for the Comeback Player of the Year Award. Tatis was a good story this year, and I liken it to the unexpected contributions that Jose Valentin made while with the team. I assume the award goes to the player [...]

After the 2007 season ended and Kerry Wood became a free agent, he told general manager Jim Hendry to give him a contract he felt was fair and he'd sign it without a second thought.

In a 2001 game against the Cincinnati Reds, Randy Johnson did what only Kerry Wood and Roger Clemens had done before: strike out 20 batters in a single game. Through nine innings, the "Big Unit" gave up one earned run on three hits and zero walks. His 20 K's tied Wood and Clemens for the most strikeouts ever through nine innings . After retiring his final victim, Johnson pumped his fist in the air...

Filed: September 20th, 2008 It took 153 regular season games, more ups and downs than we'll ever know, a new center fielder, a Freaky Friday switch of Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood, a little luck, and, well... a lot of heart. But the Chicago Cubs are your 2008 NL Central Division champs, beating the Cardinals 5-4 Saturday to seal the deal. Yes; at home, and against the Cardinals. Life is beautiful....

The Brewers score once in the ninth, and have men on first and third with two out. That brings up Prince Fielder to face Kerry Wood, and Fielder already hit two home runs tonight. The tying run is at third....

Lately Kerry Wood has been doing his best Rod Beck impression. You know, makes things interesting when they don’t need to be. Last night a bit of bad baserunning saved him from blowing a save, and so far it has been a brutal September for the Cubs closer. Wood came in with 3-2 lead to start [...]

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Kerry Wood recorded his 30th save in dramatic fashion Thursday, giving the Chicago Cubs a 3-2 victory over St. Louis. The Cubs won for the third time in five outings after losing six in a row and expanded their lead over Milwaukee in the National League Central to 5 ½ games. Light rain fell during the contest, which was scoreless until the Cubs loaded the bases in the...
