Bleed Cubbie Blue (Free subscription) | yesterday
With the great majority of Cubs fans puzzled and/or angry that Kerry Wood wasn't offered arbitration yesterday, I figured it was time to open the Can and let LaTroy Hawkins out, just to remind all of you that things could be a lot worse. And though I know most of us don't have any good memories of a player some called "LaToya", let's also remember that his failures as a Cub, while monumental, in many...

How's that for getting the news in the headline? Berman will need three days to chase this baby down. I wouldn't be surprised if Randy had it first. OK, I would. Never mind. The Astros finished last season with a payroll of around $100 million after the acquisitions of Randy Wolf and LaTroy Hawkins. To keep that team together for 2009 will cost Drayton McLane around $120 million. That's the number...

Let’s delve through the haystack of news and rumors regarding relievers: LaTroy Hawkins is off the table Those wily Houston Astros beat everyone to the punch and signed Hawkins to a one-year, $3.75M deal. I think the Astros were the only team interested in the 35-year-old righthander, and likely bid against themselves. Though the Mets did not [...]

According to Jose de Jesus Ortiz, the Astros will complete and announce the signing of LaTroy Hawkins today. It'll be a one-year deal worth around $3.75MM. Hawkins, 36 in December, posted a 3.92 ERA in 62 innings with the Yankees and Astros this year. However, he was lights out after joining the Astros on July 30th - he allowed just one earned run in 21 innings.

A lot of things broke well for the Astros in 2008: Brian Moehler, Randy Wolf, LaTroy Hawkins, Ty Wigginton, Darin Erstad and the rest of the wise men, and Wesley Wright. A few others didn't. Bruce Miles lays it out straight : The Cubs can make the Alou comparisons all they want, but it's just as likely Fukudome will turn out to be Todd Hundley or Jacque Jones (who outperformed Fukudome at the plate) or Mike Remlinger or LaTroy Hawkins, to name some free-agent disappointments of the last few years. This one may require a meeting of the minds this winter, among Hendry, Piniella and Fukudome....

Earlier today, I wrote sort of a goodbye-Shea-Stadium-see-you-in-hell post at The Cub Reporter . Also this evening, the Tribune's Paul Sullivan offers a short history of Cub misery at Shea Stadium, invoking names like Turk Wendell and LaTroy Hawkins. All of this grisly reminiscence was at odds with what wound up being a pretty satisfying Cub victory tonight . Carlos Zambrano (4 2/3 IP, 5 R, 4 BB, and...
