ANAHEIM, Calif. The Red Sox did just enough to survive John Lackey in Game 1. Now, can they beat a 25-year-old fireballer who this season compiled more strikeouts than Roy Halladay, a better ERA than James Shields, and the same amount of wins as Jon Lester? Lackey may be Los Angels' Josh Beckett a strapping Texan who dealt with some injuries and had a good year, but somewhat below his usual standard....

Of AL pitchers with at least 180 innings pitches in 2008, guess who faced the weakest competition according to BP's Quality of Hitters Faced Report ? Cliff Lee. 26th out of 26th. Lee's average challeger was a .262/.330/.405 hitter. At play here is the unbalaced schedule and an additional dose of good fortune. Lee faced the Royals five times, his most common opponent. His second most common foe was...

20 wins. 9 Complete Games. 206 Strikeouts… from a groundball pitcher no less. 2.78 ERA. In beating the New York Yankees for the fifth time this season and pitching his ninth complete game of the year, Roy Halladay cemented his standing as the best pitcher in baseball. He also may have made the race for the American League Cy Young [...]

I'm crazy busy with a couple of web projects, but I wanted to throw down my little observation about our Toronto Blue Jays and complete games by starting pitchers. Roy Halladay won his 20th game of the season yesterday, and it was his 9th complete game. That's pretty amazing for this day and age. Halladay will finish the season as the league leader in that department. If you look back over the past...

TORONTO, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Roy Halladay won his 20th game of the season with a complete-game effort Thursday, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to an 8-2 victory over the New York Yankees. Halladay (20-11) reached the 20-win plateau for the second time in his career. He gave up two runs on six hits and went the distance for the ninth time this season. Cleveland's Cliff Lee (22-3) is the only other American...

If Roy Halladay didn't face the Yanks six times this season, perhaps things would've ended differently. Halladay became the first pitcher since Luis Tiant to beat the Yankees 5 times in a single season tonight, and he hardly broke a...

Though the Yankees are still alive with just six games left to play, a single loss or a single Red Sox win will eliminate them from the postseason for the first time since 1993. Elimination is all the more likely because the Yankees will be facing both A.J. Burnett and Roy Halladay yet again in this series, having already gone 2-7 in games started by those two this season. Of the Yankees' 18 games...

Two years after the Japanese phenom known as Daisuke Matsuzaka became a Red Sox, he’s certainly been worth the money if all you care about are wins. Only Brandon Webb, Roy Halladay and CC Sabathia have won more games over the last two seasons. If you told me two years ago that he would be18-2 [...]

Roy Halladay wasn't going to let the Red Sox celebrate on his dime. With the magic number at one, the Sox just needed to beat Roy and the Wild Card spot (at least; they're still not giving up on Tampa Bay) would be theirs. But as the Sox learned, you can't spot Halladay a 5-0 lead and expect to come back. Jon Lester was surprisingly un-automatic, as the Blue Jays touched him for one in the first and...

Don't count the Yankees out just yet. The magic number for Boston is still 2 after a Boston loss to Roy Halladay and a Yankee win over Baltimore keeps it at 2 going into Sunday. Looking at the next few games, on Sunday, the Yankees have a great chance to win with Andy Pettitte pitching the last game at Yankees Stadium. The Red Sox have Dice K pitching at Toronto, but could lose that road game.
