Scientists hail Hobbie-J as 'cleverest rat'

Scientists say they have created the world's cleverest rat, called Hobbie-J, by modifying a single gene in a technique they believe could also be used to boost human brainpower. By David Harrison Published: 2:13PM GMT 21 Nov 2009 Hobbie-J, named after a Chinese cartoon character, can remember objects for three times longer than other rats and is better at finding its way through mazes. The rat, when...

UK - Lymington Times letter

Fluoridation SIR,—It is good to see cross-party support in the New Forest East over the need to get the Strategic Health Authority (SHA) to change its approach over fluoridation. An education based approach, delivered in nurseries and schools, is the most effective way of achieving this and Coun. David Harrison, supports this way forward. (Letters, October 31st). I am sorry to remind David Harrison...

Lymington Times - Fluoride opponents 'misreading' tooth decay research, warns NHS

Fluoride opponents 'misreading' tooth decay research, warns NHS ANTI-FLUORIDE campaigners claiming the state of children's teeth is improving without the controversial chemical are misinterpreting the figures, according to NHS chiefs. Higher than average child, tooth decay was key to the South Central Strategic Health Authority (SHA) approving Southampton Primary Care Trust's proposals in February...

UK - Daily Echo letter - Logic is demanding we reconsider fluoride

Logic is demanding we reconsider fluoride THE news that children in Southampton suffer no more tooth decay than the national average is very welcome. I am sure the bosses at the South Central Strategic Health Authority are as pleased as I am at this news. Good public health policy should always be guided by evidence. It is frankly inconceivable that the original decision to proceed with adding fluoride...

50th Derwentwater 10 race -Sunday 1st November

A great day for the club at the 50th running of this race, this afternoon in Keswick. Keswick AC ladies (Jo Gillyon -1:12:56, Debbie Edgington -1:14:06, and Gill Conroy -1:14:48) won the ladies team prize, and Keswick AC men (Phil Winskill -57:34, Steve Hebblethwaite -58:16, and Matthew Fraser -1:00:53) won the 50 year old men's-team trophy, not won by the club at this compettitive race since 1995....

UK - Daily Echo - In my view

There is a solution... IN my view and that of many in the Labour party in New Forest East is that the fluoride debate has gone on for long enough and a solution must be found that is acceptable to the majority. Firstly I want to congratulate Julian Lewis MP, Cllr David Harrison and others involved, on their efforts to seek a review of the Strategic Health Authority decision. The SNA has ploughed ahead,...

Great Cumbrian Run Half-Marathon -Sunday 25th October

22 Keswick AC club members took part in the 27th Great Cumbrian Run Half-Marathon today in rather gusty but mostly dry conditions. Well done to all -it was nice to see a few of you enjoying your running. The race followed the new route that was first run in 2008 -starting from the Castle, competitors run past the cathedral and through the City Centre before heading out on a scenic and undulating course...

UK - Daily Echo - SHA should change its mind

SHA should change its mind RICHARD GRANT "Just seeing the way the wind blows" (Letters, October 13), accuses Conservative Julian Lewis of waiting to see how things pan out before deciding on policies. He writes that surely the whole fluoridation campaign initially was led by the experienced local councillor and Liberal Democrat David Harrison. Not wishing to belittle either of the two men...

The Linguists: First impressions

This evening I’ll be going to Stanford for a showing and subsequent panel discussion of ‘The Linguists’, a movie about the documentation of endangered languages, that follows the narrative thread of the travels of two linguists, David Harrison and Greg Anderson, as they look for speakers of several endangered languages. Although the movie has been [...]

UK - KEEP Fluoride put of OUR tap water says Cllr. David Harrison

KEEP Fluoride put of OUR tap water says David Harrison The fight to keep to keep fluoride out of tap water is as much about democracy as it is the health risks. Leading campaigners, like Liberal Democrat Councillor David Harrison, have been working with politicians of all parties to try and stop the plans. A formal complaint has been lodged with the Health Ombudsman. The decision by the unelected Strategic...

UK - Daily Echo - Act before it's too late, Mr Denham

Act before it's too late, Mr Denham IT is now one month since I wrote an open letter to John Denham MP, published in the Echo, asking exactly what he proposes to do with regard to the fluoride in tap water issue.' I appreciate that it is the holiday season but we are now one month nearer a situation where fluoride will be added to the tap water in thousands of local homes, unless the Government steps...

Curious island

A drug originating on Easter Island, the mysterious South Pacific home of a lost statue-building people, may become the first substance to slow down human ageing, new research indicates. Rapamycin, a pharmacological product used to prevent rejection in organ transplants, has been found to extend the lifespan of mice by up to 38 per cent, raising the possibility that it may delay ageing in people. Hitherto...
