O'Neal's double-double leads Heat past Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS – Jermaine O'Neal had 22 points and 12 rebounds against his former team, and the Miami Heat beat the Indiana Pacers 96-83 on Friday night. The Pacers traded O'Neal before the 2008-09 season as they focused on rebuilding with younger players. He was animated throughout the game, drawing a technical foul for hanging on the rim after a dunk and later smiling when Pacers fans booed him.

Competition Discussion: Rest of the League

(Previously: Atlanta, Boston , Charlotte , Chicago , Cleveland , Dallas , Denver, Detroit , Golden State , Houston, Indiana, LA Clippers, LA Lakers , Memphis ). For the fourth year in a row, I got nowhere close to completing my goal of having one separate Competition Discussion post for each of the 30 teams in the league. I even started really early this time, knowing my tendencies, but alas, I got...

NBA - 703 Indiana Pacers @ 704 Atlanta Hawks The Pacers are banged up right now with several players in the injury list. Mike Dunleavy Jr and Tyler Hansbrough are out. T.J Ford, Travis Diener and Luther Head are probable, but they are all coming from late injuries. Jeff Foster is doubtful and… Danny Granger is [...]

Injury update

THE `BURBS - All-Star Danny Granger has missed the past two days of practice with a bone bruise in his heel. There's no need to panic about the bruise, according to Granger. He said the injury isn't serious and he expects to be in the lineup in the season opener against Atlanta on Wednesday. Jeff Foster is in Boston getting treatment from physical therapist Dan Dyrek for his ailing back. Coach Jim...

Should the Pacers slow the tempo down on offense to help their defense?

THE `BURBS - The Pacers want to play with a lot of intensity on both ends of the court this season. In order to do that, though, they're going to need to be able to use their bench. Coach Jim O'Brien would ideally like to have a 10-man rotation this season. The problem O'Brien may run into is that he may not be able to go that deep since Mike Dunleavy and Tyler Hansbrough are out indefinitely with...

Solo starting - for now

THE FIELDHOUSE - Jim O'Brien said we shouldn't read too much into Solomon Jones starting over Roy Hibbert on Friday because he plans to switch up the starting lineup throughout the preseason. That's easier said than done, especially when three projected starters - T.J. Ford, Brandon Rush and Danny Granger - were on the court for the opening tip. The fourth starter - Troy Murphy - would have likely...

Opportunity beckons for Pacers' Jones

Dahntay Jones and Earl Watson are defenders. Luther Head is a shooter. Solomon Jones? Well, that's to be determined. While Jones, Watson and Head have carved their niches in the NBA, Jones, the fourth free agent the Indiana Pacers signed this summer, remains a mystery.

Head's 'fresh start' now expanded role with Pacers

Luther Head picked the right team and time to have a "fresh start." Mike Dunleavy's recent setback in his knee rehabilitation will allow Head, signed by the Indiana Pacers on Sept. 17, the opportunity to re-establish himself as a scorer who averaged 10.9 points three years ago.

Look out for the masked man

THE `BURBS - "Did Dunleavy suffer a setback?" That was one of the first questions I was asked after the Pacers signed Luther Head. The answer: No. Dunleavy is still doing well in his rehabilitation from knee surgery earlier this year. So there's no need to start panicking about Mikey D. Larry Bird has had his eye on Head for a couple of years. He mentioned Head's name to me earlier this...
